Local man killed in plane crash

At 5:32 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, the Nolan County Sheriff's Office received a call in reference to a missing aircraft in southern Nolan County. Family members reported that Weldon Pat Oden, 71, of Blackwell, had taken off in a single engine aircraft from a private air field at approximately 12 p.m. and had not returned. A search of the area near the private air field was conducted and the single engine plane was located a short distance from the airfield, about 6.9 miles west of Blackwell in Nolan County. Mr.

Nolan Nursing and Rehab residents enjoy local garden

Residents of Nolan Nursing and Rehab enjoyed the hospitality and an outing at a back yard flower garden of the Sweetwater home of Joe and Lisa Seals recently.
Refreshments and fellowship were enjoyed by all. Daisey, the Seals Family pet was also a gracious host and was happy to assist with the tour.
Among the favorite flowers were morning glories, zinnias and various potted plants. The residents of Nolan enjoyed the butterflies as they fluttered from flower to flower.

Private water well screening set for July 30 in Sweetwater

SWEETWATER — The Texas Well Owner Network is hosting a water well screening from 8:30-10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office (Courthouse) for Nolan County at 100 E. 3rd Street, Suite 305 in Sweetwater to give area residents the opportunity to have their well water tested.
A meeting explaining screening results will be held at 7 p.m. on July 31, also at the AgriLife Extension office.
The screening is presented by AgriLife Extension and Texas Water Resources Institute in partnership with Nolan County AgriLife Extension.

Measles

Measles is a respiratory disease caused by a virus. The disease of measles and the virus that causes it share the same name. The disease is also called rubeola. Measles virus normally grows in the cells that line the back of the throat and lungs. Measles spreads through the air by breathing, coughing or sneezing.

Elroy Butler

July 21, 2014

Sweetwater — Elroy Butler, age 81, of Rotan, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Nolan Nursing and Rehab Center in Sweetwater. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Bronte Church of Christ in Bronte with John Driggers officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2014 at the funeral home.

Terminators are headed to national tourney

The Texas Terminators, a 12-and-under softball team, go to Bloomington, Indiana later this week to play in an ASA national softball tour-nament that will run from July 27 through Aug. 3.
The Terminators will be one of about 30 teams who are expected to play in the national tournament, and are one of five Texas entries. The tournament will begin with pool play on Monday, July 28, followed by a double-elimination format.

Team Chip owners, instructors receive continuing education

June 30-July 2, Lonnie Mendez, Eric and Amanda Martinez and other instructors and owners of Team Chip, traveled to Las Vegas for continuing education and training at the annual MAIA Supershow. There were five Team Chip schools represented at the event. There they attended many seminars and sessions with some of the best martial arts businessman, leaders and instructors. From 7 a.m. training with Bill "Superfoot" Wallace and UFC Fighter, Matt Hughes, to business, retention, advertising and much more. Master instructor Chip Townsend was a seminar speaker at the event.

Mustang Football Camp set next week

A Mustang Football Camp will be held July 23-25 at Mustang Bowl from 8-11 a.m. daily for students entering grades 3-9.
The cost of the camp is $30, and all campers will receive individual instruction from members of the Mustang coaching staff. The camp will place emphasis on skills and drills and will also have both punt, pass and kick instruction and competitions. There will also be refreshments, T-shirts and certificates.
Checks should be made payable to Sweetwater High School.

Jump Rope Camp set for August

July 21, 2014

Jump Rope Camp is August 4-6, for students completing grades Kindergarten through fourth. Third and fourth graders will attend from 9 a.m. to noon and Kindergarten through second graders will attend from 1-3 p.m. Camp will be held at the Sweetwater Intermediate School gym.
