TSTC students honored at award ceremony

Student award winners for the Fall 2014 semester at Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater were recently announced. Students are nominated by peers, faculty and staff at Texas State Technical College.

Zimmerman named WTCAC executive director

The West Texas Children's Advocacy Center (WTCAC) welcomed a new executive director last week.
Kelsey Zimmerman, a Nolan County native, has been tapped to run the organization, which specializes in conducting forensic interviews of children who are suspected of having had physical or sexual abuse.

Donald Lester Goodrich

A remembrance service for Donald Lester Goodrich, 70, of Sweetwater, will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014 at Greater Zion Baptist Church with Reverend Robert Carey officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Goodrich died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.

Lana Kay Sewell Davidson

Lana Kay Sewell Davidson, 66, of Mansfield, Texas, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014 in Mansfield.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014 at Blessing Funeral Home, 401 Elm Street, Mansfield, TX 76063.
Lana was born April 4, 1948 in Tulia. She graduated in 1966 from Sweetwater High School.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Gary Davidson; children, Matthew Davidson, Amy Davidson Williams, Angela Davidson and Christian Davidson; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brothers, Douglas Sewell and Stanley Sewell.

Sidney James Harber

ABILENE — Sidney James Harber, 83, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014 in a local hospital. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, at North Side Baptist Church 2474 Westwood, Abilene directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.
James was born June 26, 1931 in Cleburne, Texas to Louise M. (Wirt) and Sidney Oliver Harber. He served in the Marines during the Korean Conflict. He was a truck driver. James enjoyed horse races, bingo, fishing and his grandchildren’s activities.

Sheila Dolin Welch

Sheila Dolin Welch, 76, an NCHA Non-Pro Hall of Fame inductee and wife of cutting legend Buster Welch, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 7. Her family held a private Graveside service at Cottonwood Flats Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, at the River of Life Church in Abilene.
Born in Wolf Point, Montana, Sheila acquired a love of horses from her grandfather Dolin, an entrepreneur and newspaper publisher who served on the board of the Wolf Point Stampede and counted Will Rogers and Charles Russell among his friends.

Mustangs win big over Brownwood

Rhett Torres scored 27 points Tuesday as the Sweetwater boys basketball team defeated Brownwood, 71-52, at Mustang Gym to improve to 2-1 this season.

Highland girls now 10-4 after latest win

Highland, which is ranked No. 5 in this week’s Class 1A girls poll by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, defeated Forsan 47-35 on Tuesday for its eighth straight win.
