Economic impacts vs. Environmental impacts
The short-term economic impacts in the area due to fracking are certain to be positive.
An increase in population means a wider tax base, which in turn means more funds for public works. The availability of high-paying jobs helps to lift communities out of poverty and reduces unemployment rates. The more businesses which come in, the more diverse the local economy becomes. There are a lot of reasons to smile when a boom hits.

Sweetest Day Festival set for Oct. 11

With a name like Sweetwater, it makes sense for the city to celebrate the Sweetest Day holiday.
This sentiment is expressed by Scott Morgan of Morgan Real Estate, who headed up last year's Sweetest Day Benefit Concert. This year, he has recruited Melonnie Hicks of the Pioneer Museum to help plan a Sweetest Day Festival.
The celebration will take place on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Newman Park from 2-6 p.m.

Home Free concert to benefit Cornerstone Christian School

Cornerstone Christian School is partnering with a nationally recognized music group for an incredible fundraising opportunity.
Home Free, the a cappella country band who took home the title of Season 4 champion in NBC's "The Sing-Off," will be in concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Moody Coliseum, located on the campus of Abilene Christian University. All proceeds from the concert will go toward the local Christian school.

Josh Abbott Band to release new album

This Tuesday, Texas country music fans can look forward to the release of the Josh Abbott Band's latest project. The Josh Abbott Band is well-known for their hits "Taste," "Oh Tonight" featuring rising country music artist Kacey Musgraves and "Touch" — which included actress Melissa Rycroft in the music video.
But fans in Sweetwater can take pride in one of their own making it big as the band prepares for its first nationally-released album. The drummer of the band, Edward Villanueva, is a 2005 graduate of Sweetwater High School.

Mustangs prevail in shoot-out vs. Tigers

Sweetwater met up with Snyder on Friday for the 65th time, and quickly fell into a hole as the Tigers led 7-0 less than four minutes into the non-district contest at Mustang Bowl. But at the end, it had a wild 58-40 win over its arch-rival, although the victory wasn’t secured until the final 3:15 — when Bray Amos hooked up with Kaegan Jeffrey on a 66-yard pass play that gave Sweet-water an 18-point lead.

The two sub-varsity high school games on Thursday between Sweetwater and Snyder resulted in a split decision at Snyder.
