KXOX honored by SISD

Pictured is Sweetwater ISD Superintendent Terry Pittman (center) with Richard Ferguson and Jeff Stein of KXOX AM/FM. Ferguson and Stein were presented with a certificate honoring their acceptance into the 2014 TASB (Texas Association of School Boards) Media Honor Roll at Monday night's meeting of the Sweetwater ISD Board of Trustees' meeting.
They were recognized by the school district for their "fair, balanced reporting [and] providing valuable information to the community about public schools, their students, parents and patrons."

Runoff Election is Tuesday

The Republican and Democratic runoff election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at the regular polling places. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
According to votetexas.gov, "If a voter voted in the [March] primary election, the voter must vote in the same political party runoff election. If a voter did not vote in the primary election, the voter may still vote in the runoff election and for the party of their choice."

Dr. Barent McCool speaks at Rotary meeting

Dr. Barent (Barry) McCool was the guest speaker at a recent Rotary Club meeting in Sweetwater. Dr. McCool served two tours in Vietnam and was a sniper. He is currently an Associate Professor at Texas Tech University.
Dr. McCool's program was on the topic of managing crisis in life, from small to large. Dr. McCool lost his son, William McCool, during the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster. The crew were 16 minutes from home when the shuttle broke apart during the intense heat of re-entry.

SISD to remodel fieldhouse, gym showers

Approval was given during Monday night's meeting of the Sweetwater ISD Board of Trustees toward the remodel of the Sweetwater High School field house and showers at the high school gym.
Sweetwater ISD Superintendent Terry Pittman showed photos to the board and discussed the project, in that since being built in 1982, no major work has been done at the field house.
The field house showers leak and out of the eighteen total showers, only around eight work. Typically, the showers are used when the district hosts football games for out of town guests.

New school zone to be implemented

A new school zone was approved to be implemented at the Sweetwater City Commission meeting held Tuesday at City Hall.
The approved, amended ordinance would provide a reduced speed limit on designated portions of Fifth Street, from its intersection with Elm Street to its intersection with Fowler Street. The establishment of the school zone would be done on an emergency basis--thus only one reading of the ordinance would take place--and a penalty would be executed for any violation.

Sweetwater FCA all-star participants

Seven graduating Sweetwater High School athletes will participate next month in an all-star sports festival that will have games in three area cities. The event, known as the Big Country Chevy Dealers FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) All-Star Festival, will be held from June 10-14.

Historic Ford Airliner visits Avenger Field in advance of WASP Homecoming

Sweetwater citizens were recently treated to a sight not likely seen above the city in decades as a 1929 Ford Tri-Motor airliner flew over the center of town. The plane pictured during refueling at Avenger Field was en route from Phoenix, Arizona to Mount Pleasant, Texas and landed shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6. The plane is owned and piloted by Scott Glover of Mount Pleasant. The Ford Tri-Motor is powered by three Wright Whirlwind R-975 radial engines of 330 horsepower each.

Cortez named Southeast Teacher of the Year, SISD Elementary Teacher of the Year

Amy Cortez was named Southeast Elementary's Teacher of the Year, and was also honored as the Elementary Teacher of the Year for Sweetwater ISD.
Cortez teaches Kindergarten and has been teaching for a total of eight years. Two of those years have taken place at Sweetwater ISD.
She attended Howard Payne University and Texas Tech University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a minor in Biology. She has been involved with the Texas Coaches Wives Association, as well as the District Council from 2012-2014.
