The Texas Department of Transportation is hosting a series of public outreach meetings to inform Texans about the availability of cost-effective, efficient passenger transportation services, as well as gather comments from people on what services are needed in the rural communities around Abilene. If you currently use public transit, are thinking about using public transit or would like more information on public transportation services in your community, feel free to attend the meeting.

Sweetwater ISD is now offering a tuition-supported pre-kindergarten program (Pre-K) at the Southeast Elementary campus. Here are some facts about the program:
â€˘ Children must be three years of age on or before Sept. 1 to register.
â€˘ Children must fit the profile of a regular education student. Special Education students are served in the district through the appropriate placement.
â€˘ This is an educational program taught by a certified teacher.
Marselina S. Martinez, age 73, of Sweetwater, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel recited by Lupe Medellin.
Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Holy Spirit Parish (Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church) with Rev. Charles Okonkwo officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

The Interstate 20 bridge overpass at MM 248 near Sweetwater is closed to repair a hole in the bridge deck. Traffic at that location that is headed to east bound I-20 is being diverted north on the frontage road to the bridge overpass near MM 249, where they can enter I-20 and continue east. No lanes of I-20 are affected. At this time, itâ€™s unknown when the bridge will re-open. Additional information will follow as it become available.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has two dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male shepherd mix and a female shih tzu.
According to Sweetwaterâ€™s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.
