Weekend weather for Sweetwater

Today will be mostly sunny and hot with a high near 101. Winds will be from the southeast at 10 to 15 mph, and after 4 p.m. we'll have a 10% chance of isolated thunderstorms.
Those rain chance will remain until around 7 p.m. tonight. Otherwise, we'll see partly cloudy skies, with a low around 75 and southeast winds at 5 to 10 mph.
For the weekend, we'll have highs in the upper 90s with lows in the mid 70s. Winds will vary from 5 to 15 mph.

Betty Lou Jones, 84, longtime Seminole resident, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014 at her home in Seminole.
Betty was born April 18, 1930 in Jefferson County near Addington, Okla. to Betsy (McDaniel) and Irving Davis.

Texas game wardens tapped to patrol Rio Grande

The U.S.-Mexico border spans more than 1,900 miles, with the brunt of the length — more than 1,200 miles — spanning south Texas.
As concerns about illegal immigration grow, Texas Governor Rick Perry has deployed the Army National Guard, Department of Public Safety officers and state game wardens to assist the Border Patrol in deterring immigrants from crossing the Rio Grande and cracking down on the smugglers who often assist them.
Nolan County Game Warden Jake Simmering spent a week on the front lines of the border war in June, working in Hidalgo, a small town near McAllen.

Western Texas College and Texas A&M work together on new degree path

WTC and Texas A&M partner in developing a new degree path for students at Roscoe Collegiate High School

Western Texas College and Texas A&M University are working together to initiate a new degree path for students at Roscoe Collegiate High School. Representatives from all three schools met recently to discuss the details of this new venture. From Texas A&M, Dr. Glenn Shinn, Dr. Buddy Faries, Dr. Elizabeth Crouch, Dr. Darrell Dromgoole and Dr. Gary Briers.
Roy Bartels represented Western Texas College and Dr. Kim Alexander from Roscoe Collegiate High School.

County conservation partners to host local work group meeting

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Nolan Soil and Water Conservation District cordially invite the public to attend their 2014 Local Working Group (LWG) meeting on Monday, Aug. 11, from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
The purpose of this annual LWG meeting is to set local conservation priorities and bring conservation stakeholders together to discuss conservation topics and issues relevant to helping Nolan County farmers and ranchers better conserve on-farm natural resources.

Sweetwater ISD hosts Chamber Coffee

Sweetwater Independent School District hosted the monthly Chamber Coffee on Wednesday at the Sweetwater High School library. Many members of the community attended the event and listened to speakers Dr. Ronald Morris, SHS principal an Congressman Randy Neugebauer.

Something for everyone at the Nolan County Fair

You won't have to look too far beyond the city limits for some excitement this weekend — there will be "Something for Everyone" at the 2014 Nolan County Fair.
The festivities will take place on Saturday, Aug. 9 and Sunday, Aug. 10 at the Nolan County Coliseum. A lamb show sponsored by Texas Best Show Series will be held both days in the covered arena.
Several events are lined up for Saturday, such as the Nolan County Cruisers Car Show. The cars will be stationed in front of the Coliseum.

Tax free weekend begins this Friday

Starting on Friday, citizens all across the Lone Star State will have the opportunity to save some money on their back-to-school shopping during Tax-Free Weekend.
The three days of savings — which runs through Sunday, Aug. 10 — will be the sixteenth time Texas offers its residents a slight break in their school supply and clothing purchases.
Items eligible for tax-free savings must be priced under $100. Once again, lay-away plans can be used this year to take advantage of the tax-free savings, as noted on the State Comptroller's website.
