Aiken earns 3A all-state recognition from TSWA

Sweetwater’s Greg Aiken, who will play baseball for McMurry University starting next year, this past week added a second all-state honor to his list of postseason achievements.
Aiken, who as a senior compiled a .443 batting average with 17 extra-base hits and also fielded .990 at first base for the Mustangs, was a Class 3A second team all-state selection at that position by the Texas Sports Writers Association.

Nolan County grand jury clears Abilene officers in shooting death, indicts 12

A Nolan County grand jury recently cleared Abilene officers who were involved in the June standoff that ended with police shooting Michael "Micky" Berry to death.
According to 32nd Judicial District ADA (Assistant District Attorney) Barrett Thomas, grand jurors did not indict the five Abilene police officers involved in the shooting.

Nancy McGinley

Nancy McGinley passed peacefully in her sleep on July 17, 2014 in Austin, Texas. She was born Nancy Sue Neeper on Feb. 8, 1933. Nancy, one of nine children, grew up on her father's cotton farm north of Sweetwater in Fisher County. She graduated high school and married Jack McGinley in December of 1950. They had four children, traveled and loved each other until Jack's demise in 2004.

WCTADRC to host affordable housing summit on Wednesday

Junior rodeo finals returns to Sweetwater

For the first time since 2006, the American Junior Rodeo Association will hold its National Finals Rodeo at the Nolan County Coliseum.
The five-day affair — which kicks off Tuesday and continues through Saturday — will feature young buckaroos in several age brackets competing for national championship titles in traditional rodeo events ranging from team roping to barrel racing. To get this far, participants had to qualify at four AJRA-sanctioned rodeos throughout the year, which were held in various West Texas cities.

Great White to perform during Nolan County Fair

On Saturday, August 9, Great White will be in concert during the Nolan County Fair at the Nolan County Coliseum.
Great White consists of founder and lead guitarist, Mark Kendall; Michael Lardie (keys, guitar); Audie Desbrow (drums); Scott Snyder (bass) and lead singer Terry Ilous. With over 10 million albums sold worldwide, the band is most recognized for their smash hit “Once Bitten, Twice Shy”.
In a phone interview, Kendall expressed the band's excitement over their upcoming performance in Sweetwater.

Benefit event set for Sweetwater native

A benefit dinner and dance for Melinda Torres, who is battling leukemia, will be held Saturday, Aug. 2 at the Sweetwater Jaycees Barn.
Melinda, born and raised in Sweetwater, is the daughter of Joe and Elizabeth Torres. She is a single parent with a son, Dylan, attending Texas Tech University.
Melinda is a Registered Nurse and began her nursing career at Abilene State School before moving on to Abilene Regional Medical Center. She is now at Baylor All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth.

Sweetwater dog deemed dangerous after reportedly killing numerous cats

A Sweetwater man pleaded guilty to charges of a violent dog and dog-at-large following a court hearing at the Sweetwater Municipal Court on Wednesday.
This is after a pit bull-mix was accused of killing at least 20 cats in a Sweetwater neighborhood. Ten formal complaints have been filed to the city since early July, prompting the owner to be summoned to court.
"It is not about the breed or even the fact that it roams around," Carolyn Mullican, a neighbor said. "I am concerned it may turn to children or the elderly."
