Daniel Lee (Dan) Giesler, 85, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, in Boerne, of heart failure.
He was a native of Sweetwater, and was born Jan. 7, 1929, to Robert Lee (Lee) Giesler and Jewel McLaughlin. Dan graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1948.
Dan married Nita Faye Clark in the First United Methodist Church of Colorado City on June 28, 1948. Married for 64 years, they were best friends with a bond that was unassailable and forged from love and laughter.
They have run roughshod over their first two playoff opponents â€” much as they did consistently during the regular season â€” beating Santa Anna 73-26 in bi-district and 19th-ranked Cross Plains 62-35 in the area round.
Today, the No. 2-ranked Highland girls basketball team returns to yet another comfort zone â€” Abilene Christian Universityâ€™s Moody Coliseum â€” where at 7 p.m., the Lady Hornets will begin defense of their Region II-1A, Division II title in 2013 that sent them to the girls state tournament in Austin for the first time in school history.

A total of $23,807 was raised on Wednesday for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during the annual MDA Lock-Up that took place at the Sweetwater fire station. According to organizers, this year has raised the most money ever in Sweetwater during an MDA Lock-Up. A total of 32 "Jailbirds" contributed to the money raised, getting donations from businesses, organizations and individuals for the cause.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, in its 45th year, is the nation's largest free tax assistance and preparation service, providing free tax assistance to Texans of any age and giving special attention those 60 and older. Sweetwater High School is hosting a three-day softball tournament starting today at the Jerry Collins Complex, plus a girls golf tournament at Sweetwater Country Club that will be held Friday and Saturday.
The SHS softball team began their tournament with morning games against Westbrook and Merkel and a game with Lamesa that starts at 2:30 p.m. The 8 a.m. game with Westbrook was a pool game.
Sweetwater High School hosted its Mustang Power Classic recently, with 22 teams and over 260 athletes competing in the meet held at the SHS gym.
The Sweetwater boys were ninth out of 19 teams in their division with 11 points and Sweetwaterâ€™s girls were third out of 18 teams in their division with 25 points. The top qualifying individual lifters will go to regional meets in March.
For the boys, Jay Lomas was second in the 132-pound class; Austin Marlett was third in the 181-pound class; Colter Reed was fourth in the 123-pound class; and Dylan Jimenez was fourth in the 198-pound class.
Sweetwater High School was represented by 10 girls when it opened the 2014 track season at Texas Techâ€™s indoor meet in Lubbock this past weekend. Individual results follow:
Davina Walker was sixth out of 40 girls in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.72 seconds and 24th out of 113 girls in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.5;
Nisha Williams was 12th out of 40 girls in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.86 seconds and 20th out of 113 girls in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.17;
Abby Garcia was 29th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.9 and also high jumped 4-4;
Today will be sunny with a high near 62. Winds will be breezy and from the north-northwest at 20 to 25 mph, decreasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph.
