RPMH offers free cholesterol screening

September 3, 2014

September is National Cholesterol Education Month and to acknowledge this occasion Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Lab will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E. 12th  Street, on Thursday, Sept. 11, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. to offer free cholesterol screening.

The next addition to Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series is Sweetwater from Melonnie Hicks, Betty Turner and Pioneer City County Museum. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images and memories from the early days of Sweetwater.

Helen Farris Ballard

Helen Farris Ballard, age 92, died peacefully on Aug. 27, 2014 at Kindred Rehabilitation in Grapevine, Texas after a short illness. Helen was born July 23, 1922 in Colorado City, the daughter of Charles Richard Farris and Wenona Daugherty Farris.

Mr. Jesse Barrera, age 79, of Sweetwater, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, in an Abilene hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at Saint Ann’s Catholic Church with Father Michael Udegbunam officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell County Cemetery under the care and direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Mr. Barrera was born Dec. 4, 1934, in Bastrop to Francisca and Francisco Barrera. He was a Sweetwater resident for most of his life. He married Rosa Carrasco on Sept. 11, 1954 in Colorado City. She preceded him in death on October 9, 2003.

Robert “Bob” Hinshaw

Robert “Bob” Hinshaw, 82, joined our Lord in Heaven on Monday Sept. 1, 2014.
A funeral service will be held Thursday Sept. 4, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marceal Viola Reeves

Marceal Viola Reeves, 90, of Hewitt, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, Sept. 1, 2014.
A visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, 2014 with the funeral service to begin at 10 a.m. at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Drive, Waco. Bishop Don Connell will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. There will also be a visitation on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lester Schaefer, 90, of Ballinger passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2014 at Ballinger Memorial Hospital.

Spikers crush Colorado City

After winning Game 1 against Colorado City, the Sweetwater volleyball team began Game 2 of Tuesday’s non-district match in lack-luster fashion, at one time trailing 10-5.
Coach Liz Miller didn’t like what she was seeing. “I could tell after the first few points that we’d get beat if we didn’t take care of busi-ness,” she said of her team’s Game 2 start.

Sweetwater Regional FCU to host Chamber Coffee

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3 at Sweetwater Regional Federal Credit Union, located at 1900 Preston Road.
The financial institute is owned by the members of the credit union, with Gail Rose as the on-site manager. Founded in 1956, the business serves anyone in Nolan and Fisher counties and has four employees.
The company was originally named Sweetwater Teachers Federal Credit Union.
