Krisa Denise Shifflett

June 30, 2014

Funeral services for Krisa Denise Shifflett, 38, of Odessa will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Rev. Carolyn Shifflett Easter will officiate and interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Shifflett died Monday, June 30, 2014 at Buana Vida Nursing Home in Odessa.

John H. Henley, Jr.

June 30, 2014

Funeral services for John H. Henley, Jr., 70, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Reverend Wayne Kirk will officiate and interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 2, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Henley died Sunday, June 29, 2014 at his home.
He was born May 1, 1944 in Rotan. He married Mattie E. “Sue” Underwood on Aug. 24, 1967 in Abilene.

Josephine Hill Henderson

Memorial services for Josephine Hill Henderson, 61, of Sweetwater, will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kary Fry officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Henderson died Saturday, June 28, 2014, at her residence.

District 5 all-star pitchers

Andrew Melendez of the Junior Leaguers (ages 13-14, shown), Leo Holsey of the 9-10 year-olds and Antonio Heredia of the 11-12 year-olds were among Sweetwater’s pitchers this past weekend at various District 5 Little League all-star tournament games being played in the Abilene area.

Forms for Jump Rope Camp are due today, June 30. The camp will be held August 4-6 for students completing grades Kindergarten through fourth.
Third and fourth graders will attend from 9 a.m. to noon, and Kindergarten through second graders will attend from 1-3 p.m. Camp will be held at the Sweetwater Intermediate School gym.

SW’s Aiken commits to War Hawks

Greg Aiken won’t be goi-ng far from home when he continues his baseball car-eer in college.
Aiken, a four-year starter at first base for Sweetwater who was the district MVP in his senior year, committed to play for McMurry University in Abilene after playing in a high school all-star game in Round Rock. There, he helped the North to an 8-1 win over the South all-stars at Dell Diamond, which also was home to the state high school baseball tournament in May.

Junior golf clinic set this week at Sweetwater CC

A Mustang Junior Golf Clinic will be held Tuesday through Thursday, July 1-3, at Sweetwater Country Club for ages 5 and up. Sessions are from 9-11 a.m. daily. The cost is $60 per child, but family discounts will be available.

Junior Leaguers start bracket play with big win at district tourney

June 30, 2014

Sweetwater’s 13-14 year-old Junior League all-stars began bracket play Friday with a convincing 14-4 win over Breckenridge.
However, Sweetwater’s 11-12 year-old Little League all-stars came up just short, 8-7, in their bracket game against Abilene Southern and needed a bounceback win Saturday over Merkel to avoid elimination at their District 5 Little League tournament.
The Junior Leaguers were to play Clyde in a winners bracket game on Saturday afternoon at Abilene North.
