Family RV will serve as sponsor for 10th annual Sammy Baugh Classic

Starting on Thursday, the high school football season will officially kick off in Sweetwater when the 10th annual Sammy Baugh Classic starts a three-day, three-game run at Mustang Bowl.
Grape Creek and Haskell meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Classic opener. On Friday, Sweetwater hosts Lubbock High with kickoff also set for 7:30 p.m. The Classic will then conclude its run Saturday when a pair of Class 6A schools — Lubbock Coronado and Weatherford — meet in an afternoon game at 3 p.m.

This series, which will run from October 2014 to May 2015, includes five great shows. Anyone interested in joining can contact the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce for more details.

Commission leaves burn ban in place, mulls financial decisions

A lack of rain across Nolan County has forced the local commissioners court to leave the current burn ban in place.
More precipitation is needed, said members of the commission at Monday's meeting, before the panel can consider repealing the ban. The issue will be revisited at the group's next regular session.
A request was made by Precinct 2 Commissioner Terry Locklar to purchase a 90-inch contour/packer roller for road construction.

One transport made in wreck

Sweetwater Emergency Services transported the driver of the 18-wheeler shown after a wreck after 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning on FM 608, between Roscoe and Highland school.
The driver was unresponsive and was transported to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in guarded condition. The truck was carrying dry cement at the time of the crash.

Peggy Lee Hoyle

Graveside services for Peggy Lee Hoyle, 63, of Blackwell, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, 2014 at Blackwell Cemetery with Rev. Daniel Dotson officiating. Interment will follow at Blackwell Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
A visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, at McCoy Funeral Home at 401 East Third Street in Sweetwater.
She died on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014 at her residence.
She was born on Dec. 7, 1950 in Ponoma, Calif. She married Johnnie Carol Hoyle on July 7, 1972 in Fort Stockton.

Johnnie Jo (Joni) McMillin, age 86, of Mesquite, Texas, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014 at Willow Bend Nursing & Rehab in Mesquite, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Matt McGowen officiating.
Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 from 6-8 p.m.
