Mumps: Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department's monthly focus on diseases

Mumps is a contagious disease that is caused by the mumps virus. Mumps typically starts with a few days of fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite, and is followed by swelling of salivary glands. Anyone who is not immune from either previous mumps infection or from vaccination can get mumps.

Four Sweetwater High School athletes — offensive lineman Ty Crain, receiver Michael Lawrence, quarterback Kaegan Jeffrey and defensive back Isaiah McGee — have earned honorable mention on the Class 4A all-state football team from the Associated Press Sports Editors.

The high school basket-ball season resumes today for some local teams as the 2014 portion of their sched-ules begins to wind down.

JV girls get split at Abilene

Sweetwater’s JV girls fin-ished with a 2-2 record at Abilene High’s tournament. Sweetwater’s victories came against Graham (45-29) and Jim Ned (31-30) while the team lost its games with Abilene High (29-35) and Midland High (42-43).

7th grade Red girls results at SW tournament

The seventh grade Red girls lost all four games at Sweetwater’s recent tourna-ment that was held this past weekend.
Sweetwater lost to Merkel 36-16 and Snyder 26-20 on Dec. 12, then fell to Merkel 45-23 and Snyder 37-28 on Dec. 13.

Many participate in parade of lights

Many businesses, organizations and individuals participated in this year’s Sweetwater Parade of Lights on Monday evening. Sweetwater’s Outstanding Citizens and Business of the Year were parade marshals and Santa finished the parade.
