We'll see some areas of freezing drizzle before 11 a.m., with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 41. Wind chills could be between 19 and 29. Winds will be from the southwest around 5 mph, shifting to the north in the afternoon.
For tonight. we should see a slight chance of rain before midnight, then a chance of snow. Precipitation chances are at 50%. Expect mostly cloudy conditions, with a low around 29 and north-northeast winds around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.

Winter weather causing wrecks, hazardous roads

Due to the winter weather that has come into the area, roads in Nolan County are extremely slick and hazardous. Travel is nearly impossible on all roadway types and is certainly highly discouraged.

RPMH hosts 24-hour treadmill walkathon

February 23, 2015

In an effort to raise awareness of the dangers of cardiovascular diseases, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) once again hosted a 24-Hour Treadmill Walkathon, Feb. 20-21, 2015. The event took place at the hospital’s new Community Wellness Center with proceeds benefiting the American Heart Association.

SHS art students participate, advance in State VASE

February 23, 2015

Sweetwater High School art students participated in the Region14 Visual Art Scholastic Event Saturday. Advancing to State VASE are Keegan Von Atzigen, Kala Wofford, Abby Lynch and Kendra Pack. Lizzy Hendrick's sculpture will be on display at the Grace Museum for Youth Art Month in March. Victoria Carley received a Superior rating for her Dotted Butterfly.

Highland boys start playoffs today

The calendar says late February, which means the high school basketball playoffs are underway. And if weather permits, the Highland boys face Sands at 7 p.m. in Sterling City to begin their run today.

A 70% chance of freezing rain and sleet will be likely today, with some thunder also possible. It will be cloudy and cold, with a high near 24 and north-northeast winds at 10 to 15 mph. Wind chill values could be between 8 and 14. Little to no ice accumulation is expected, with total daytime sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
For tonight, we'll see mostly cloudy conditions with a low around 22 and northeast winds at 5 to 10 mph. Winds will shift to light and variable in the evening. Wind chill values will be between 15 and 20.

Sweetwater Jaycees host Media Day

The Sweetwater Jaycees are gearing up for the 57th Annual World’s Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up. Media day is held a few weeks before the Round-Up every year where Miss Snake Charmer contestants are introduced to the media and the Jaycees demonstrate how to milk the snakes of their venom to make anti-venom. The Sweetwater Jaycees Rattlesnake Round-Up is an educational event held on the second weekend of March. Sweetwater Jaycee Riley Sawyers is shown talking to the pageant contestants about snake safety.

Officers, city leaders celebrate opening of new police building

February 22, 2015

Sweetwater patrolman Cory Stroman said the city's new police department is a "major step up" from the nearly 90-year-old facility — it was built in 1926 — the staff has been using for decades.
Stroman was just one of many law enforcement officers on hand Friday for the grand opening and Masonic dedication of the new 14,051-square-foot facility, which is located at 400 East Avenue A.
