Two local teachers attend Shakespeare workshop

Two Sweetwater teachers recently participated in a workshop organized by Humanities Texas on the plays of William Shakespeare.
Jennifer Aiden and Mary Burrows, who teach English at Sweetwater High School, attended the workshop, which offered teachers the opportunity to work closely with leading scholars, studying the historical and cultural contexts of Shakespeare’s work and strategies for teaching his plays. Nearly 50 teachers from around the state participated.
The workshop was held at the historic Byrne-Reed House in Austin.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 119 calls for service, issued five citations and made seven arrests from Oct. 26-28, 2012.

The SPD received 41, 911 calls.

• Theft — 100 block of S. Hopkins.

• Raul Garcia, 57 — Warrant.
• Jim Creek, 29 — Evading/driving while intoxicated.

Virginia Elizabeth Barry Hendricks

ARLINGTON — Virginia Elizabeth Barry Hendricks, age 94, of Arlington, Texas entered into eternal heavenly rest on Oct. 25, 2012.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 at Wade Family Funeral Home Chapel, 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington with Dr. James Scirratt officiating. Entombment followed the service at Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington. The family received friends on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at Wade Family Funeral Home.

SHS tennis continues fall play

Sweetwater High School’s varsity tennis teams begin their final week of action during the fall season at 4 p.m. today when they go to Midland Lee for matches with Monahans. Sweetwater then ends fall play with a match at Big Spring at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Last week, Sweetwater hosted Abilene Cooper on Oct. 23 and also traveled to Brownwood for a match on Oct. 27. Sweetwater lost in both matches, falling to Cooper 14-5 and to Brownwood 12-7.

Solis is going to regional

Roscoe’s Mirian Solis advanced to compete at the regional cross country meet to be held this Saturday at Arlington’s Vandergriff Park after recently placing fifth at the district meet with a time of 13:10.

Highland will be sending two teams to compete at the regional cross country meet at Arlington’s Vandergriff Park this Saturday, as its varsity boys and girls placed second at their district meets held in Eula on Oct. 22.

S’water runners finish at Snyder

Six Sweetwater cross country runners competed in the season-ending district meet at Snyder’s Nature Field on Oct. 24. Two boys and four girls ran at the meet. The top three teams and top 10 individuals advanced to regional competition this Saturday. Sweetwater’s results were as follows:

Local West Nile concerns continue

A concerned local business owner hopes to inform the public about a scary situation. Leslie Brazelton, owner of Les' Barber Shop, shared with the Sweetwater Reporter in a phone interview that she recently tested positive as having the West Nile virus.
Though she is not certain, Brazelton thinks she may have been bitten by a virus-carrying mosquito while outside mowing the lawn at her house located between Sweetwater and Trent.

Breast cancer luncheon celebrates local survivors

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) kicked cancer to the curb to celebrate survival stories and successes at their annual Breast Cancer Survivors' Luncheon on Friday, October 26 at the hospital classroom. This year's theme was "Give Cancer the Boot".
Following a welcome from RPMH administrator Donna Boatright and an invocation from Dr. Robert Eaker, guests enjoyed a pink-themed meal prepared by the hospital's dietary staff.
