Rain causes Tuesday wrecks

July 17, 2013

Emergency services from the Sweetwater Fire Departments responded to several wrecks in Nolan County on Tuesday that were said to be related to the rainfall received throughout the day.
No transports were made in the two-vehicle wreck shown above that occurred on Lamar Street. One person was transported in another minor wreck on the corner of Neff and Alabama Streets in which one vehicle failed to yield and struck another vehicle.

Today will be cloudy with a high near 76. winds will come from the north-northeast at 5 to 10 mph, and we'll also have a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Those rain chances will decrease to 40% tonight, with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 66. Winds will come from the east-northeast at 5 to 10 mph, shifting to the south-southeast after midnight.

Hazardous weather outlook for portions of West Central Texas

The National Weather Service in San Angelo has issued a hazardous weather outlook for portions of West Central Texas including the following counties: Fisher, Nolan, Sterling, Coke, Runnels, Irion, Tom Green, Concho, Crockett, Schleicher, Sutton, Haskell, Throckmorton, Jones, Shackelford, Taylor, Callahan, Coleman, Brown, McCulloch, San Saba, Menard, Kimble and Mason.

Local churches participate in Sweetwater Outreach Week

Several local churches came together this past week to take part in this year's Sweetwater Outreach Week. Two houses were painted and several lawns were mowed around town for people in need.
According to Jamie Witt, this year's Sweetwater Outreach Week coordinator, the event began about six years ago at Fourth and Elm Church of Christ. "Our outreach minister at the time, Doug Crum, began the project and got other local churches involved with it and we are just trying to keep it going each year."

Two take 8,500 bicycle ride to raise awareness for youth obesity

Jerry Smith and Mike Sode of Lansing, Mich., are on an 8,500 mile bicycle ride to raise awareness for at-risk youth and youth obesity. They are creating hope and inspiring the world by traveling through the 25 fattest cities, according to the Men's Fitness Magazine 2012 list, ending at The Biggest Loser Ranch in Los Angeles, Calif.

Both main lanes of westbound I-20, US 80 to close tomorrow

NOLAN COUNTY – Both main lanes of westbound I-20 at the US 84 overpass in Nolan County are scheduled for closure July 17-18 for ongoing bridge replacement work.
Westbound I-20 will be closed during the afternoon of July 17 to allow crews to pour the deck of the new bridge. All interstate lanes are expected to be open by the afternoon of July 18. The entire project is expected to be completed by early fall.

Children’s boutique opens in Sweetwater

Two local women have fulfilled a dream and opened a children's boutique in Sweetwater — The Princess and the Frog. "We have always wanted to open a children's boutique," said co-owner Misty Humphreys.
Humphreys and co-owner Shorie Henderson hosted a Grand Opening for their store, located at 1408 E. Broadway, Suite 1 (east entrance), with face painting and a bounce house for children attending the event.
The two will be running the store, along with Henderson's daughter, Skye Henderson.

City discusses ordinance on portable storage containers

July 15, 2013

Sweetwater City Commissioners met on Tuesday for their regular session and approved the minutes for the meeting held on June 11. The city commissioners then received the proposed 2013-2014 budget draft for review and discussion. The investment report for the quarter ending June 30 was approved as well.

Chamber donates to Big Country Cutting Horse Association

Gil Cherry (right), President of the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce, presents a donation to the Big Country Cutting Horse Association.
This event is held at the Nolan County Coliseum and brings into Sweetwater between 400-500 people who sleep, eat and shop in Sweetwater.
