We call them the dog days of summer, but how do dogs deal with the summer days (and other pets, too)? As the season drags on and the heat rises, pet owners can ensure the best care for their animals by taking a series of steps.
"The extreme summer temperatures we're seeing pose special risk for pets that owners should be aware of. Of course everyone is aware of the need for adequate water and shade and of the dangers of leaving pets in the car," said Dr. Jerod Peek, a local veterinarian from the East Ridge Veterinary Hospital.

It’s true that newborn babies are immune to many diseases because they have antibodies they got from their mothers. However, the duration of this immunity may last only a month to about a year. Further, young children do not have maternal immunity against some vaccine-preventable diseases, such as whooping cough.
Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, urges producers who want to purchase coverage through the Noninsurable Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) to do so before the sales closing date of Sept. 1, 2011.
NAP provides financial assistance to producers of noninsurable crops when low yields, loss of inventory or prevented planting occur due to normal disasters.
The 2011 Sweetwater Mustangs tried to beat the heat when they took to the field early today to begin working out for the upcoming football season at the high school practice field. Practices also began today for football players at Roscoe, Highland and Blackwell as well as for the Sweetwater volleyball team.

The Texas Education Agency released school accountability ratings for 2011.
Highland School received the highest rating in Nolan County, receiving an Exemplary rating. Blackwell School received an Academically Acceptable rating and Roscoe Collegiate High School received a Recognized rating. Roscoe Elementary was Academically Acceptable and Hobbs Alternative Education Co-op received an AEA (Alternative Education Accountability) Academically Acceptable rating.
The theft of scrap metal has become a fast growing crime in Sweetwater according to Sweetwater Chief of Police Jim Kelley. Metals such as brass, copper, aluminum, nickel and stainless steel are being sought after by thieves looking to make money by selling it to recyclers. Items that are stolen have included gutters, window units, fence posts, gate doors, old appliances and junk cars.Â
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 80 calls for service, issued eight citations and made four arrests on July 28, 2011.
The SPD received 32, 911 calls.

Ann Griffin Gleszer was born to Frank and Catherine Golick of Columbia, Connecticut on June 21, 1916. She graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Master’s Degree in Education. While attending college, she also took flying lessons and got her private pilot’s license, eventually becoming an air traffic controller at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
