Melinda Torres story shared for National Minority Health Month

April 25, 2015

April is National Minority Health Month. This month, the story of the late Melinda Torres, a resident of Sweetwater, was shared on the Facebook page for "Delete Blood Cancer."
The organization began in 1990, when Peter Harf and his daughters went door-to-door in an effort to find a donor match for his wife and their mother, Mechtild Harf. Although Mechtild lost her battle, the Harfs started a bone marrow donor center in her honor that has since grown to be the world’s largest, with branches in the United States, Germany, United Kingdom and Spain.

Auditorium board eyes former police building

April 24, 2015

The former police station, located at 204 East 4th Street, has served a myriad of purposes throughout its nearly 90-year history. When it was opened in the late 1920s, it was the original city hall. It has since served as an agriculture extension office, pubic library and finally, the headquarters for city law enforcement.
Now that the police department has moved into its new building on Avenue A, the Municipal Auditorium board of directors hopes to acquire the unused portion of the building and repurpose it to fit its needs.
