23 indicted by Grand Jury

A Nolan County Grand Jury indicted 23 people on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, with one re-indictment. Fifteen of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
Samuel Lloyd Hawrylak was indicted for possession of marijuana, a state jail felony. Court documents state that Hawrylak knowingly possessed a usable amount of marijuana in an amount of five pounds or less, but more than four ounces on July 27, 2012. His bond was set at $5,000.

Nine enter pleas in District Court

Nine pleas were entered during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2011.

Crash kills Abilene driver

September 27, 2012

One person was killed in a one-vehicle crash on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012 in Nolan County. The crash occurred around 5 a.m. on Interstate 20, 2/10 of a mile east of mile marker 242 in Nolan County.
Michael Norris Creek 63, of Abilene was taken to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater. He was pronounced dead at 6:50 a.m. by Doctor Lufkin Moses. His body was taken to the Hamil Funeral Home in Abilene. The next of kin have been notified.

Seventh graders receive iPads

The seventh graders now have their iPads. This opportunity came an entire year earlier than anticipated. SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) was able to make this happen thanks to a $99,040 technology grant, which was obtained following an application submitted by Mike Marlett, the district's Director of Educational Technology.

Football player of the week

September 27, 2012

Andrew Davis is the Football Player of the Week for Sweetwater. Davis, a 270-pound junior starter on the offensive line, had nine pancake blocks last week against Wall.
