Mustangs hold off Rangers to pick up win in 4-3A opener

The home field has been kind to Sweetwater’s base-ball team this year, and the Mustangs took advantage of those familiar surroundings to win their District 4-3A opener on Tuesday against Midland Greenwood.
Despite being out-hit 7-6, Sweetwater prevailed 4-3 as the Mustangs (9-10 overall) scratched out a 4-1 lead through five innings and held on in improving their home record to 7-1.
Sweetwater, which never trailed, used its small-ball abilities to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning and added single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings.

SW falls victim to GW rally in 5-2 defeat

After a district-opening win over Snyder four days earlier, the Sweetwater softball team had another chance to make a big statement in the early 4-3A race when it hosted Midland Greenwood on Tuesday.
And the Lady Mustangs looked ready to do that over the first five innings as senior pitcher Maty Montgomery pitched a shutout while Sweetwater opened a 2-0 lead at the Jerry Collins Complex.

TSTC hosting energy summit

Texas State Technical College West Texas is hosting the 2013 Southwest Energy Summit on Wednesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 21, 2013. Energy industry employees from across the state will converge on Sweetwater for the two-day summit which includes sessions on oil and natural gas, wind energy, nuclear energy, workforce and regional infrastructure, transportation and Coal.

Three dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has several dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption are a male heeler mix, a female chihuahua and a female chihuahua mix.
According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Kiwanis Club reboots local talent show

Following a twenty-year run of Star Search--the local talent show sponsored by the Sweetwater Kiwanis Club, the civic group is unveiling a new type of talent show in an effort to boost involvement.
Introducing..."Sweetwater's Got Talent."
With only one performing act at last year's Star Search finals in the high school division, change was necessary, according to Kiwanis Club president Mitch Moore. The format of the show at the finals will be changed to resemble the television talent show "America's Got Talent" but with a local twist.

RPMH presents check to AHA

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital recently held their second annual Treadmill Walkathon benefiting the American Heart Association in February. RPMH would like to thank the community, family and friends for their support in this event.

Water topics reported at city meeting

During his City Manager's report at the March meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission, Eddie Brown discussed the outcome of the city's dispute toward the application for a $7.5 million loan to the Bitter Creek Water Supply Corporation (BCWSC).
At their meeting held on February 28 in Austin, the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) approved the loan. Sweetwater was represented by some members of city staff at the meeting, but they were unable to make their case to the board.

Bibby bitten by rattlesnake

The 49th Annual Lone Star Expo Rattlesnake Roundup went on throughout the weekend without the star of the show: the Texas Snake Man. Jackie Bibby was loading rattlesnakes this past Friday afternoon at his home in Rising Star to bring them to Brownwood for the Expo when he was bitten in the stomach by one of the venomous rattlers. His father brought him to the Brownwood Regional Emergency Room in very serious condition. At last report, Bobby Dudley reported that Bibby was listed in critical condition where he was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at BRMC.
