November is American Diabetes Month, and to acknowledge this Alice Velez from the Diabetic Outreach Program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the health department on Thursday, Nov. 29, from 8:30 a.m. until noon to check blood glucose and answer any questions you may have regarding diabetes. Pamphlets and materials will be available.
On Sunday, November 18, a half-century of service will be celebrated as the 50th anniversary of the Lawrence Family Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) fellowship hall, located at 309 Cedar Street in Sweetwater.
Starting at 11:30 a.m., a full Thanksgiving meal-- "with all of the trimmings and none of the cleanup"--will be served and continue until 1 p.m. Providing this year's decorations at the event will be church member Karan Bergstrom.
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, going all the way back over a century ago, the first semblance of a Veterans Day celebration took place. And as we celebrate veterans on the holiday in 2012, Americans recall and express their gratitude for the sacrifices made by past and present veterans as they served their country.
In 1918, an armistice--which could also be called a truce--put an end to World War I, which was known at that time as The Great War. The next year, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the day as "Armistice Day".
A local resident recently headed back to his old stomping grounds to receive a top honor from his high school.
Mark Hicks, owner of Trent Studios in Sweetwater, was inducted into the ninth class of the Weatherford High School Hall of Fame. The celebration was held on the first weekend of October 2012, as Hicks was one of three other athletes and a track team to be inducted.
Texas State Technical College West Texas will host a Remembrance Day National Roll Call event from noon to 1:15 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at the Sweetwater Campus Student Center. All are invited to attend. There will be appearances by the Dyess Air Force Base Honor Guard and the Sweetwater High School Pops Sensations.

Oil and gas leasing will be the topic of discussion during a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service meeting set for 6 p.m. Nov. 19, on the third floor of the Nolan County Courthouse in Sweetwater.
âHeightened activity in the âoil patchâ here is the chief topic of a lot of conversations these days,â said Zach Wilcox, AgriLife Extension agent in Nolan County.
Many trees were recently taken down and concrete work has begun at the former First Financial Bank motor bank on Broadway to prepare for the Allsup's store that will be in that location.
The 2012 Nolan County Health Fair was in full-swing on Thursday, November 8 at the TSTC (Texas State Technical College) Fitness Center, located on the Sweetwater campus.
Vendors from Sweetwater, Nolan County and the surrounding areas were able to present their booths to attendees, who could visit their stations to learn about various companies and programs while walking away with free items as well.
Among those with booths was the TSTC Nursing Department. Their booth was primarily directed to Alzheimer's awareness, with informative sheets that cite warning signs of the disease.
Hospital employees open canned food drive up for community participation
As Thanksgiving Day nears in just a couple of weeks, employees at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) are thinking about area residents who might not have the opportunity to enjoy a holiday dinner. In an effort to help those less fortunate, employee organizers are inviting the community to participate in their â1,000 Cans of Caringâ canned food drive.
Funeral services for Oddie B. Williams, 97, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at Highland Heights United Methodist Church. Rev. Joseph Garnett and Rev. Claude McKiddy will officiate. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, located at 401 E. Third Street in Sweetwater.
Williams died Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at his home.
