During the recent Nolan County Forward Planning committee meeting at the Sweetwater Country Club, the topic of public safety was presented by Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda.
The meeting allowed for different entities within the county to come together to learn about the potential impact and consequences of the Cline Shale oil development.
Chief Frieda's report was based mostly on his recent conversation with a police chief from North Dakota, as the northern town has also been affected by the Bakken shale development.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 48 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on April 30, 2013.
The SPD received 37, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, no civil papers served and made three arrests on April 30, 2013.

Four more Nolan County athletes have been added to the list of state track qualifiers by the University Interscholastic League.
In Class 3A, Nick Nemir of Sweetwater was announced Wednesday as the ninth, or wild card, qualifier in the boys 300-meter hurdles.
Also, three athletes were added in Class 1A, Division II â€” Matthew Lowry (boys high jump) and Mason Magness (boys pole vault) of Blackwell and Jesus Leanos (boys 3,200-meter run) of Roscoe. The state meet is set for May 10-11 in Austin.

The Texas A&M Agrilife Extension office in Nolan County will host a free Do Well, Be Well With Diabetes event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department. Before the activities begin, free blood glucose checks will be given from 8:30-9 a.m.
Local doctor Larry E. McEachern, M.D. will kick off the event with his program, "What is diabetes?"
Speakers will also include Ted Bayse, owner and pharmacist at The Medicine Place. He will explain medication. He will speak from 10:15-11 a.m.
In honor of the National Day of Prayer, the community of Sweetwater is invited to participate in a 12-hour prayer vigil at the Sweetwater Prayer Center at 1418 Hailey Street.Â Everyone is welcome to participate any time from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, to unite in prayer for the nation and community.Â Prayer stations will be set up following the 7X7 prayer model providing opportunities to pray for government, education, church, family, media, business and military.
Many homes and businesses around Nolan County are painting the town purple to celebrate cancer survivorship, remember loved ones lost to the disease, honor caregivers and join Nolan County's fight against cancer.
An update from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) was given during Friday's meeting of the Nolan County Forward Planning Committee, held at the Sweetwater Country Club.
The meeting was held in order for various community leaders to learn more and take proactive measures as the Cline Shale oil development makes its way to Sweetwater and the surrounding cities within the county.
The two representatives from TxDOT first discussed different projects that are currently being undertaken. As always, safety is the utmost concern.
Hampton Inn in Sweetwater is currently putting on a food drive in which employees, guests and members of the community are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items to the drive. All food collected will be donated and distributed by Nolan County United Way.
As an added incentive to donate to the cause, for every five cans donated to the drive, a raffle ticket will be placed in a drawing for a Jambox speaker.
According to General Manager Adrian Solano, the hotel is putting on the food drive as a part of Founders Day for the company, Hersha Hospitality.
