You’ve been Caned!

Students from Emmanuel Fellowship Youth Ministry are going out every night to “cane” houses.
The holiday equivalent to “Flamingo Flocking”, the Youth Ministry is fundraising the entire school year to raise money to send a group of 24 students and four adults to Rockaway, New York - a rural community hit hard by Super Storm Sandy.
The group will be in Rockaway from June 7-17, 2013 working with Next Step Ministries to help people clean out and rebuild their homes, as well as share the gospel.

County appoints two to library board

The county commissioners approved two appointments to the County-City Library Board during their meeting held on Monday morning, December 10, 2012 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Cherry Green of Blackwell and Brenda Stirl of Roscoe will be replacing Ame Monroe and the late Charles Roberson, respectively, on the board.
In addition, several bonds were approved during the meeting for county personnel.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 140 calls for service, issued 19 citations and made 17 arrests from Dec. 7-9, 2012.

The SPD received 97, 911 calls.

Lou Ann Humphreys

Funeral services for Lou Ann Humphreys, 68, of Sweetwater, will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Frankie Santiago officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Humphreys died Monday, Dec. 10, at her home.

Seminar to help diabetics enjoy holiday foods

The holiday season can be a difficult time for people with diabetes as many popular seasonal treats are rich in sugar and other ingredients harmful to diabetics. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) hopes to equip the community with the knowledge to make better food choices with a free Munch and Learn Seminar on Wednesday, Dec. 12.

Honoring military heroes

All of Ms. Irene Armstrong's seventh grade Texas History class (112 students) made Veterans Day Posters to send to military heroes over the holidays.
Some examples are shown, with students Alondra Ruiz, Colt Bewley, Katy Nixon, Alicia Hernandez, Bella Peña, Esmeralda Mendez, Eva Ornelas, Bridgette Lanier and Jaelyn Page.
Also, 26 National Junior Honor Society members made holiday cards for military heroes.

Take preventive action to avoid the flu

National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination, as well as fostering greater use of flu vaccine after the holiday season into January and beyond. NIVW was the week of Dec. 2-8.
The health department wants to encourage residents to use preventive actions:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Love’s construction continues

Construction began on Monday, Sept. 10, for the new Love's Truck Stop in Sweetwater and has been continuing at a fast pace.
Expected completion is around the end of February 2013. The truck stop will also house an Arby's restaurant.
The land is 53.14 acres and is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Hopkins Road and Interstate 20.

Kay T. Corderman

Kay T. Corderman, 98, of Sweetwater, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012 at Nolan Nursing and Rehab Center in Sweetwater.
Corderman will be cremated. Services will be planned at a later date under the direction of McCoy Funeral home.
