Ross Blanchard, 89, of Snyder, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Hoyt House Assisted Living in Sweetwater.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on April 21, 2012, at First Christian Church in Snyder with the Rev. Wendell Ferguson officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. on Friday at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

Lady Mustangs to face Iowa Park in 3A softball playoff

After finishing as the No. 3 team in District 5-3A, the Sweetwater softball team will next face Iowa Park in a Class 3A bi-district playoff.
The playoff has been set for Monday, April 30 in Graham at 7:30 p.m.

SHS tennis players fall in quarterfinals
LUBBOCK — Sweetwater High School’s entries at the Region I-3A tennis tournament were eliminated in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

It’s official —Brian Frieda appointed new police chief

The appointment of Brian Frieda as Sweetwater Police Chief was approved by the City Commission on Tuesday morning, April 17, 2012 at a special-called meeting at City Hall.
Prior to the vote, City Manager Eddie Brown recapped the hiring process and how the Texas Police Chief Association was utilized in the process. A regional committee of law enforcement leaders was formed for the local panel, which included Abilene Police Department chief Stan Standridge who was the chairman.

Local collegiate 4-H member serves as Ambassador at National 4-H Conference

Wade Howard, a Senior Agriculture Leadership major at Texas Tech University recently served as a Collegiate Ambassador for the National 4-H Conference in Washington, DC. Wade was one of 13 collegiate 4-H members selected nationwide to serve as an ambassador and the only ambassador chosen from Texas. The event was March 22-29, 2012.

Warren L. Martindale

Funeral services for Warren L. Martindale, 91, of Fisher County, Texas, was held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at First Christian Church with Rev. Curtis Ward officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Ben Richey's Boys Ranch of West Texas Rehabilitation Center.
Martindale died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, in Sweetwater, Texas.

Snyder romps past Sweetwater

It was simply no contest when visiting Snyder came to town Tuesday to face Sweetwater in a pair of key District 5-3A contests. The Tigers’ baseball team romped to an 11-0 win to nail down a playoff spot and damage the Mustangs’ hopes, while the Lady Tigers’ softball team rolled to a 14-1 victory to earn the No. 2 playoff seed from the district. Sweetwater, enjoying its best season in years, will still go to the playoffs as the No. 3 seed later this month after finishing 4-4 in district play, while Snyder winds up 5-3. Brownwood, with an 8-0 record, is the district champion.

Castillo shoots 173 total at I-3A tourney

Sweetwater’s Alex Castillo shot an 86 in Tuesday’s final round of the Region I-3A boys golf tournament to finish the event with a two-day score of 173.
Castillo was making his first regional golf appear-ance and played as a med-alist at Bentwood Country Club in San Angelo.
He was 26 shots off the winning two-day total of 147 carded by Taylor Grant of Wylie.

Mobley returns to SHS as head football coach

Although he's actually a Big Lake native, Shane Mobley said his hiring Monday as head football coach and athletic director at Sweetwater High School feels like coming home.
In a sense, he's right.
Mobley — unanimously hired by the Sweetwater ISD board at its regular monthly meeting to replace Craig Slaughter, who resigned last month— not only has deep roots in West Texas, but is returning to a place where he has coached previously and where his wife, Tecka, grew up.
"I'm very fired up for this," he said. "The fact is, I'm ready to come back to West Texas with my family."

Crime Stoppers announces Crime of the Month

The Nolan County Crime Stoppers have announced the Crime of the Month.
On Tuesday, April 10, 2012, it was reported to the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office that between Thursday, April 5, 2012 and Tuesday April 10, 2012 unknown person(s) entered an electric sub-station. Once inside the sub-station the person(s) took copper grounding strap off a piece of equipment. The copper grounding strap is described as being four (4) inches wide by three-eights (3/8) inches thick and comes in various lengths. The location of the electric sub-station is in south Nolan County.
