Hamlin, Bangs advance at Bowl

Hamlin and Bangs ad-vanced to the next round of the state playoffs after winning Friday in an area-round playoff doublehea-der at Mustang Bowl.

Hamlin 21, Eldorado 17
Hamlin led 14-3 after three quarters, but the Pied Pipers found them-selves trailing 17-14 after Eldorado came up with two fourth-quarter touchdowns in the span of a little over three minutes.

One killed in I-20 wreck

• DPS Troopers investigating Nolan County fatal crash

One person was killed and one was injured in a two vehicle crash nine miles west of Sweetwater, in Nolan County. The crash occurred at 2:41 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, in the westbound lane of Interstate 20, 0.4 miles east of mile marker 233. This crash is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Graveside services for Danny Wayne Pope, Jr., 41, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Sweetwater Cemetery. Rev. Chris Stephens will officiate with interment to follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Pope died Saturday, Nov. 24, in Sweetwater.
He was born in Sweetwater on Nov. 30, 1970. He was a life long resident of Sweetwater. He worked most of his life in the oil patch driving rig, moving trucks, etc.

Salome Najar Molina

Our Mother, Salome Najar Molina, has gone to be with the Lord and will be greatly missed by all of us. She died peacefully, surrounded by her sons, daughters and grandchildren on Nov. 21, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab in Sweetwater. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 26. Burial will follow at Mitchell County Cemetery.
Mrs. Molina is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Rosa Dominguez; and grandson, Manuel Molina, Jr.

THANKSGIVING-I trust you had a wonderful time of food and fellowship with your family yesterday as you celebrated Thanksgiving. Have you ever wondered about the first Thanksgiving? I read that the pilgrims dug seven times more graves than they built huts and yet found time to be thankful. While doing a little research, I came across what is considered to be the first Thanksgiving Proclamation, made by Governor William Bradford. It was made three years after the Pilgrims settled at Plymouth and reads like this:

RPMH Diabetic Outreach Program to offer blood sugar checks

November is American Diabetes Month, and to acknowledge this Alice Velez from the Diabetic Outreach Program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the health department on Thursday, Nov. 29, from 8:30 a.m. until noon to check blood glucose and answer any questions you may have regarding diabetes. Pamphlets and materials will be available.

New pastor at First Presbyterian Church

First Presbyterian Church in Sweetwater is welcoming a new face to their congregation and the community: their pastor.
Pastor Kary Fry from Bronte comes to the church after almost a year of work from the Pastor Nominating Committee. Making up the committee is chairman Ruthann Campbell, Keith Brock, Jeannette Bryant, Buck Cason and Richard Smola.
"We believe that God has led us together in finding Pastor Fry to receive our call," the committee stated. "She has been interviewed and highly approved by our Presbytery Committee on Ministry."

Black Friday on Thursday

In Sweetwater, several stores opened early to welcome shoppers to their Black Friday sales on Thursday evening. Wal-Mart had three different times for shoppers to take advantage of their sales, as the first kicked off at 8 p.m. on Thursday, followed by a 10 p.m. sale, as well as on 5 a.m. on Friday.
Another local store offering earlier sales was Bealls, with their first year to offer early savings starting on Thanksgiving night at 8 p.m. On Black Friday, they also opened early at 6 a.m. for door-buster sales and will remain open until 9 p.m.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 68 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests from Nov. 21-22, 2012.
The SPD received 33, 911 calls.
Calls for service:
• Unattended death — 300 block of Poplar.
• Burglary of a habitation — 1000 block of W. 6th.
• Counterfeiting — Sweetwater.
Arrested by SPD:
• Adam Jacob Aguilar, 17 — Warrants.
• Darrel Mosher, 31 — Warrants/driving while license invalid.
