The Sweetwater FFA chapter competed at the Area II Leadership Development Contest on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Howard Junior College. The chapter was well represented by four teams consisting of 12 members. These students advanced to the Area round of competition by placing in the top two of their event at the district level. Kyle Lambert placed second in Job Interview, advancing to the state contest in Huntsville on Nov. 30.
The Nolan County United Way (NCUW) is promoting their yearly campaign with the theme "Give Where You Live".
Their commitment to serve local entities is spear-headed by Wendy Smart, the Executive Director of the NCUW. Running solely on pledges, a board of volunteers from the community hope to impact the community with a caring power.
To donate to the local United Way, a one-time donation can be given through a payroll deduction or a quarterly basis. Each donation helps thousands of people in the area through nine agencies, who undergo an annual interview process.

When Black Friday started in the 1960s, as a means to ring in the Christmas shopping season, retailers hoped to move their finances from the â€średâ€ť to the â€śblackâ€ť. But fifty years later, businesses are almost foregoing the original plans and beginning their sales after the Thanksgiving meal on Thursday night.
In Sweetwater, Wal-Mart will have three different times for shoppers to take advantage of their sales, as the first will kick off at 8 p.m. on Thursday, followed by a 10 p.m. sale. At 5 a.m. on Friday, they will once again open their doors to offer even more savings to customers.
"We've got another holiday to worry about," a young boy once said. "It seems Thanksgiving Day is upon us."
Those words come from none other than the perennial pessimist, Charlie Brown, from the 1973 classic film carrying his namesake about the November holiday. And for anyone who is a child at heart, the all-too-familiar story gives a history lesson on the most popular Thanksgiving celebration while giving a glimpse into how Americans today observe the holiday.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 42 calls for service, issued two citations and made three arrests on Nov. 20, 2012.

Former Sweetwater ISD superintendent Steve Maikell was in Austin last weekend to see the first Formula One race on American soil since 2007 and submitted these pictures to the Reporter.
Shown below during the final qualifying is eventual race winner Lewis Hamilton, who on Sunday drove his McLaren car to victory in the U.S. Grand Prix. Hamilton held off Sebastian Vettel for the final 14 laps to capture his fourth victory of the 2012 season.
The race was held on Austinâ€™s new $400 million Circuit of the Americas track that was completed this past June.
