The Sweetwater High School volleyball team began action at the Nita Vannoy Memorial Tourna-ment in San Angelo today after losing at Seminole in its most recent match this past Tuesday.
Sweetwater comes into the two-day tournament with a 6-5 overall record after falling to Seminole in four highly-competitive games Tuesday. The Lady Mustangs â€” who had also lost to Seminole in four games when the teams met in Sweetwater a week earlier â€” won the first game 25-19, but Seminole came back to win the last three games by nail-biting scores 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22 in claiming the match.
Rain chances will be with us all weekend in Sweetwater, as today calls for a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms. The high will be near 93 with partly sunny skies and winds from the south at 15 mph. Gusts will be as high as 25 mph.
Friday night, expect a 20% chance of precipitation with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 72. Winds will remain at the south around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
On Saturday, the 20% chance of rain and thunderstorms continue with a high near 94. We'll see partly sunny skies and south-southeast winds at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Johnny Williams, with attorney, Britt Thurman, pled true to revoking his probation. He was originally put on probation on Oct. 19, 2009, for forgery, a state jail felony. For his plea, Williams received 24 months confinement in the State Jail Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He will also have to pay a $1,500 fine, $305 in court costs and $1,000 in attorneys fees.
The Big Country Medical Reserve Corps is offering a Psychological First Aid (PFA) Training Class on Saturday, Aug. 25, beginning at 9 a.m. in the training room located by the Emergency Room entrance at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.Â The class will be free of charge to those that register and is open to the public.Â Refreshments will be served and lunch can be purchased from the hospital cafeteria.
A Nolan County Grand Jury indicted 12 people on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012. Eight of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
Anthony Dylan Bentley was indicted on three counts including sexual assault, a second degree felony, indecency with a child by contact, a second degree felony and indecency with a child by exposure, a third degree felony. The victim was younger than 17 years old at the time of the crimes around Feb. 1, 2012. His bond was set at $25,000.
The Nolan County United Way's Loyal Contributors Luncheon was held on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) training classroom.
Following the convocation by Martin Baker, a welcome was given by Executive Director Wendy Smartt. Beverly Campbell then introduced the officers and members of the Board of Directors.
Kirby Andrews, one of the board members, collectively thanked the hospital's food staff, along with those in attendance representing the agencies and contributors for their work and support over the past year.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 55 calls for service, issued three citations and made one arrest on Aug. 21, 2012.

Funeral services for Latanya Sweet Gaines, 48, of Snyder, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Pastor G.T. Garnett II of King Soloman Baptist Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A wake will be held Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, from 6-8 p.m.
Gaines died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, in Snyder.
Rev. Roy C. Jones, age 74, of Big Spring, Texas (former resident of Sweetwater, Texas) passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, at Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home in Big Spring, Texas where he had been a resident for seven years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at Mt. Rose Baptist Church with Rev. E. L. Wilson officiating and Rev. Tommy Jackson will serve as conductor.
