National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) is an annual observance to highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases and celebrate the achievements of immunization programs in promoting healthy communities. This year’s NIIW is April 23-30. Infants are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases; that is why it is critical to protect them through immunizations. Each day, nearly 12,000 babies are born in the United States who will need to be immunized against 14-vaccine-preventable diseases before age two.

As the U.S. Congress deals with the budget and spending deficit in Washington, cuts begin to hit home in Sweetwater. Such may be the case for the Big Country RC&D Area, headquartered here in Sweetwater and serving 12 counties in the area according to Secretary/Treasurer for the organization, Tom Henderson of Nolan County. This local not-for-profit organization began operations here in 1991, after being recognized and authorized by the Secretary of Agriculture as a viable, organized rural, community development organization.Â
Being ready to respond with assistance in any emergency situation is the job of one local volunteer organization, Big Country Medical Reserve Corps (BCMRC). Knowing who to go to for expertise in various emergency situations is also important. That is why BCMRC is hosting representatives with Ludlum Measurements, who will conduct training on the basics of radiation safety during the BCMRC’s next meeting.
In response to community requests, Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater will begin offering continuing education classes. The Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Excel and Basic Networking Skills classes are available to the entire community.
"Scheduling and curriculum will be flexible to meet the needs of our community," said TSTC Interim President Gail Lawrence. There are basic and advanced classes in each subject and the students can self-assess their skill level.
Local businesses are jumping in on the action by signing up their employees for classes.
Sweetwater Healthcare Center recently held an open house and the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors were also on hand to have a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new addition to the nursing home facility.
