A local employee of the Texas Department of Transportation was recently honored for his years of service to the agency. Mike Rosas, a transportation technician for the Nolan County maintenance office, was recognized for his five years of service to the department.
Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Prosper Cathy Moreno, 78, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Father Charles Okonkwo will officiate and interment will follow at Loraine Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be said by Lupe Medellin and Ester Rodriguez at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Moreno died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at her home.
Bernard Shelan (nÃ© Shelansky) passed away Wednesday night, Nov. 21, at the age of 96 from natural causes. He was born in St. Louis, MO to Charles and Rae Shelansky and raised in South Philadelphia and Roscoe, Texas. A local football star, Bernie âThe Mouseâ Shelanskyâin spite of his small statureâwas awarded a football scholarship to Abilene Christian College, where he graduated in 1938 with a B.S. Degree in Physical Training and set a new kickoff return record that remained in tact for 20 years.

The Nolan County United Way (NCUW) is promoting their yearly campaign with the theme "Give Where You Live".
Their commitment to serve local entities is spear-headed by Wendy Smart, the Executive Director of the NCUW. Running solely on pledges, a board of volunteers from the community hope to impact the community with a caring power.
To donate to the local United Way, a one-time donation can be given through a payroll deduction or a quarterly basis. Each donation helps thousands of people in the area through nine agencies, who undergo an annual interview process.
The Sweetwater FFA chapter competed at the Area II Leadership Development Contest on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Howard Junior College. The chapter was well represented by four teams consisting of 12 members. These students advanced to the Area round of competition by placing in the top two of their event at the district level. Kyle Lambert placed second in Job Interview, advancing to the state contest in Huntsville on Nov. 30.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 68 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests from Nov. 21-22, 2012.
The SPD received 33, 911 calls.

Six members of Sweetwa-ter High Schoolâs volleyball team have garnered all-District 4-3A recognition.
Setter Suede Shirley and outside hitter Kendra Cros-son made the all-District 4-3A first team. Middle blockers Kathleen Campbell and Shelby Cason and outside hitter-middle blocker Kelsi Crosson were all named to the second team, and libero Janell Walker earned all-district honorable mention. All six players are seniors.
This is the third straight year for Shirley, Kendra Crosson and Campbell to be named either first- or second-team all-district.
