Suddenlink Communications has launched more new high-definition (HD) TV channels in Abilene, Snyder and Sweetwater.Â
New channels include: Fuse HD, Independent Film Channel HD, We TV HD, Biography Channel HD, Disney XD HD, History Channel International HD, The Science Channel HD, Fox Business Network HD, Fox Soccer Channel HD, Oxygen HD, HBO Comedy HD, HBO2 HD and Starz Comedy HD. In addition, a number of new digital channels in standard definition have been added, including: MTV Jams, VH1 Soul, Nick 2 and Starz Comedy.
Dennis Cumbie , Executive Director for the Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA), announced a Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signup March 14, 2011 through April 15, 2011. This is the second consecutive year that USDA has offered a general CRP signup.
Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently welcomed the Reeves Family, who were commissioned as missionaries in 2001 serving with The Mission Society in Trujillo, Peru. Rev. Martin is a graduate of Asbury Theological Seminary and also an ordained pastor in the New Mexico Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church where he served as a senior pastor for seven years. The Reeves' vision is to make disciples of Jesus Christ; inviting children, youth and adults into a personal relationship with Christ, discipling them in their faith, and empowering them to be disciple makers.
Longtime Fairbanks resident Brian Hubbard Groghan, 64, passed away at his home Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011.
Brian was born Nov. 15, 1946, in Sweetwater, Texas. He lived in Alaska for the past 43 years. He was known as one of the finest welders in Alaska. He was a beloved father and grandpa.
Brian traveled to Alaska in 1968 to "strike it rich" on the pipeline and never left. He loved to hunt and fish and was rarely seen without his faithful companion Holmes, his pet Yorkshire terrier.
These three Roscoe athletes have qualified for the Class 1A regional powerlifting meet to be held Saturday at Sundown High School. Jose Rangel will compete in the 148-pound class, while Landon Jones will compete in the 181-pound class and Corey Hatcher in the 242-pound class.
Sweetwater High School’s Kelsey Painter and Bri Munoz will go to the state powerlifting meet in Corpus Christi later this month after qualifying at the regional meet that was held Saturday in Odessa.
Painter lifted a total of 675 pounds for a third-place finish in the 132-pound class. Munoz placed fourth in the 105-pound class, but also qualified for the state meet because her 550 total was the best of any Class 3A athlete in her weight class.
Three Sweetwater High School girls basketball players have earned recognition on the all-District 5-3A squad for their outstanding play this past season.
Alicia Finn, a 5-11 junior post who was the Lady Mustangs’ leading scorer and rebounder in district play, earned first team honors while Taylor McKoy, a 5-8 senior post, was chosen to the second team.
Kinsey Browning, a 5-3 junior guard, received all-district honorable mention.
Callie Sandusky and Sierra Allen have received two of District 11-1A’s top honors for Highland on the all-district girls basketball team. Sandusky was chosen as the defensive player of the year and Allen was named newcomer of the year. Another Highland player, Kara Hughey, was also selected to the 11-1A all-district team.
Highland was the district runnerup and finished with a 22-12 record this season, making the Region II-A tournament before losing to Newcastle in the semifinals.

The Sweetwater Texas Theatre Acquisition & Renovation (STTAR) board of directors announces "Live on Stage at the Texas", a live music performance on the original stage of the Texas Theatre, on Saturday, March 12, with Jay Boy Adams.
Several guests were on hand at the Sweetwater Rotary Club meeting held on Monday, Feb. 28 at the Texas State Technical College banquet room. The meeting held a double purpose in raising funds for the End Polio campaign spearheaded by Rotary International and highlighting the Rotary Youth Exchange program with a Powerpoint presentation from Jack Campbell.
