The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 55 calls for service, issued seven citations and made two arrests on May 8, 2012.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Family violence assault — Sweetwater.
• Burglary of a building — 500 block of E. Avenue A.
• Theft — 1000 block of W. 8th.
• Theft — 400 block of NE Georgia.

Arrested by SPD:
• Ashley Runnels, 30 — Possession of a controlled substance.
• Justin Logston, 31 — Possession of a controlled substance.

Joyce Lynn Presswood Smith

Joyce Lynn Presswood Smith, 74, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2012 in Abilene. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2012 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Burial will follow at noon in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Nine Lady ‘Stangs get 5-3A recognition

Sweetwater advanced to the playoffs in softball for the first time in 15 years this season, and nine of the team’s players have earned all-District 5-3A honors to recognize that success.

Alon gas pumps coming to Sweetwater

May 9, 2012

Alon gas pumps will soon be popping up at local 7-11 gas stations. Alon purchased hundreds of 7-11's in the region that sell Fina gasoline. Last week, Alon signs were put up at local 7-11 convenience stores. While the name will change from Fina to Alon, the curved red, white and blue stripes will remain the same.

City denies Atmos Energy rate change

The City Commission met for their monthly meeting on Tuesday morning, May 8, 2012 at City Hall.
Three bids were opened for construction on the 2011 TCDBG (Texas Community Development Block Grant Program) sewer improvement project. Two of the three bids were from San Angelo companies, while the third was from a Waco-based business.

Local TxDOT employees earn service awards

Local employees of the Texas Department of Transportation were recently honored for their years of service to the agency. Daniel Caballero (shown), who has since retired from the Nolan County maintenance office, was honored for 35 years with TxDOT.
Also honored but not pictured was Joe Ashley, a Nolan County maintenance transportation technician, who was recognized for five years of service. Lauren Garduno, P.E. (left), Abilene District Engineer, made the presentation during a meeting in Abilene.

• Assault — 400 block of NE Georgia.

• James Somerlot, 31 — Public intoxication/warrant/resisting.

Guadalupe Reyes

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Guadalupe Reyes, 90, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Charles Okonkwa officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A rosary will be said Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Reyes died Monday, May 7, 2012, in Sweetwater.

Reward offered for fugitive with Aryan Brotherhood ties

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety has added Paul Joseph Borreson, 56, to the Texas 10 Most Wanted Fugitive list and a $7,500 cash reward is being offered for information leading to his capture. He is affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas gang and has been arrested 46 times in at least 11 states. All tips can be offered anonymously.

TMSCA students place at competition

TMSCA students from Sweetwater Middle School recently traveled to San Antonio for the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association State Competition. They competed in Math, Science, Calculator and Number Sense. There were over 500 students from around the state that competed.
While they did well in Math, Number Sense and Calculator, in Science they excelled as a team and individuals. The team consisting of Daniel Peña, John Clift, Kilanie Arpin, Chance Saunders, Lizzie Gray and Marc Butler received eighth place out of 21 teams.
