Out of the ashes of the White Hat fire

The Nolan Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) is welcoming a new member to their team — another large brush truck to its fleet.
During last summer's White Hat fire — which was the largest fire in Nolan County history, the Nolan VFD was one of several fire departments that responded. Along with them was the Sweetwater Fire Department (SFD), who unfortunately had their military truck wrecked while battling the blaze.

Tree health highlights AgriLife Extension program in Nolan County

SWEETWATER – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will conduct a tree health program from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, in the meeting room on the third floor of the Nolan County Courthouse in Sweetwater.
Zach Wilcox, AgriLife Extension agent in Nolan County, said the program’s main objective will be to determine what, if anything, can be done with the many landscape trees affected by last year’s record heat and drought.

Juveniles arrested for Palomino Motel fire

July 5, 2012

Two male juveniles, both age 12, were arrested on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, for arson. They are suspected of starting the blaze in the burning of the Palomino Hotel on East Broadway in Sweetwater.
According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, a call came in at 8:29 p.m. about the fire and firefighters were able to get the blaze under control by 8:50 p.m. About 12 firefighters had made it to the scene with six units at the scene.

New venture course now being offered

The West Texas Innovation Network is sponsoring a “Fast Trac® New Venture™ Course beginning on July 11 through August 3, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The course, designed to help a new business or launch a new business successfully, will be held at the TTU Small Business Development Center Abilene, 500 Chestnut Street, Suite 601 in Abilene.

Lion’s Club hosts Sweetwater Independence Day parade

Many area residents attended the Lion's Club Independence Day parade on Wednesday, July 4, 2012.
Many entered the parade including Girl Scout troops, churches, teams, civic organizations, horseback riders, individuals and others.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 57 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on July 3, 2012.

The SPD received 55, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft— 500 block of Lamar.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male Juvenile, 12 — Arson.
• Male Juvenile, 12 — Arson.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served three civil papers and made four arrests on July 3, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Jeffrey Wayne Keith, 45, of Abilene — Jones County warrants/surety withdrawal and bond forfeiture.

Geraldine "Jerry" Doris Smith Williams

July 5, 2012

Graveside services for Geraldine "Jerry" Doris Smith Williams, 84, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Crews Cemetery near Winters, TX, with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Friday evening July 6, 2012, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Williams died Thursday, July 5, 2012, at Sweetwater Healthcare Center in Sweetwater, TX.

SW teams reach finals

ABILENE — Sweetwater will be represented in two of the final three District 5 Little League all-star championship games today after semifinal wins on Tuesday.
Sweetwater’s 13-14 year-old all-stars will take on Abilene South at 7 p.m. in the Junior League final at Abilene Wylie after beating Abilene North, 6-5, in their semifinal.

Two dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has two more dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male and a female, both mixed breed dogs. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Three bodies reportedly found at Alamo Street home

July 4, 2012

Officers of the Sweetwater Police Department were alerted to the 1100 block of Alamo Street in Sweetwater close to noon on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, when a call came in to the station about three bodies being found in a residence on that street.
The Sweetwater Fire Department was also called and had several units at the residence, but soon left the residence.
According to authorities, everything was okay at the residence as a person who had delivered a meal to the house was off of prescribed medication and thought he saw dead bodies.
