A benefit lunch for Fidel "Pancho" Albarran, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, will be held Sunday, June 9 at the Roscoe Community Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mr. Albarran has been an employee for the City of Roscoe for over 20 years. Menu items are homemade beef or chicken enchiladas, beans, rice, tea, and banana pudding. Dine in or carry out. All proceeds will go towards Mr. Albarran's trips to Lubbock for treatment. The Fourth Annual "Blue Agave" Bar-B-Que and Chili Cook-Off will be held today in Blackwell. The event is "Lone Star" and "CASI" sanctioned, which will include brisket, ribs, chicken and beans. There will also be margarita and Bloody Mary pour-offs. A concert and dance featuring Mark David Manders will be held thirty minutes after dark. The 32nd Annual Texaco Country Showdown is coming to Nolan County. KXOX AM/FM will host America's largest country music talent search and radio promotion. Approximately $200,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded nationwide including the Grand Prize of $100,000 cash to the National Winner, presented at the National Final televised special.
The Nolan County Crime Stoppers have announced two Crimes of the Week.
On Thursday, May 16, 2013, a burglary was reported to the Sweetwater Police Department. It was reported that sometime between Wednesday, May 15 and Thursday, May 16, 2013 unknown person(s) entered a business located on the north side of town near FM 1544 and Elm. The unknown person(s) stole several large items as well as tools, ladders and smaller items.
Texas A&M Agrilife Extension's Family Consumer Sciences agent Tasha Baxter (Nolan County) provided a program entitled, "Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes" for patients with diabetes and their families, as well as any others interested in attending. The Sweetwater-Nolan County Heath Department sponsored the location and Alice Velez with the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital's Diabetes Outreach Program provided free blood glucose testing. The program was divided and presented into four different areas with four different speakers with special knowledge in those areas.
