Johnnie Jo (Joni) McMillin, age 86, of Mesquite, Texas, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014 at Willow Bend Nursing & Rehab in Mesquite, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Matt McGowen officiating.
Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 from 6-8 p.m.

First day of school for SISD

Students at Sweetwater Independent School District campuses, as well as Highland ISD and Blackwell ISD, began classes today for the 2014-2015 school year.

Jim Wilks named President of Texas Lions Camp

Jim Wilks of Sweetwater was elected President of Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville during the camp’s Aug. 2 annual board meeting.

Nettie Ruth Newman

Services for Nettie Ruth Newman, 71, of Sweetwater, will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Mike Crowley officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
A visitation will be held on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
She died on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014 at Hendrick Medical Center.
She was born on March 3, 1943 in Sweetwater. She married Mannon Newman on Jan. 2, 1960 at Fourth and Elm Church of Christ in Sweetwater.

Two make Super Team; 7 honored

A pair of Sweetwater High School football players are on the All-Big Country preseason Super Team that was announced Sunday by the Abilene Reporter-News.

SHS spikers split six matches at SA

Sweetwater High School’s varsity volleyball team won three of its six matches over the weekend at San Angelo’s two-day tournament.
The Lady Mustangs, who are 9-7, will host Graham and Breckenridge Tuesday before a one-week break.

Banyard helps the Vikings defeat KC

Former Sweetwater High School athlete Joe Banyard rushed four times for 15 yards to help the Minneso-ta Vikings improve to 3-0 in NFL preseason play with a 30-12 win on Saturday night over the Kansas City Chiefs. Banyard was in three games for the Vikings last season and is competing for a ros-ter spot again this year.
