Jump Rope Camp set for August

July 21, 2014

Jump Rope Camp is August 4-6, for students completing grades Kindergarten through fourth. Third and fourth graders will attend from 9 a.m. to noon and Kindergarten through second graders will attend from 1-3 p.m. Camp will be held at the Sweetwater Intermediate School gym. Volleyball camp slated for Aug. 6-8

A volleyball camp will be held Aug. 6-8 at the Sweetwater Middle School gym for students who are entering grades 4-8. The camp will be held each day at the gym, located on 305 Lamar Street, from 4-6:30 p.m. A fee will be charged and includes a T-shirt. Pre-registration is greatly appreciated. A concession stand will be open for snacks and drinks. The goal of this year’s camp is to improve players’ skills in volleyball for the upcoming season with instruction through games and fun. Monday's local events

Starting today, July 21, Lighthouse Assembly of God will have Vacation Bible School.
The program will run each day through Friday, July 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. The church is located at 412 Newman.
Also, the Nolan County Chapter of AARP will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 21, at the SNAP building.
A business meeting and musical program will be presented, and a covered dish meal will be served so bring a dish. All that are interested are welcome to attend.

Great White to perform in Sweetwater next month

Great White will be performing in Sweetwater on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at the Nolan County Coliseum.
Gates will open at 7 p.m. and the opening bands will begin at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets will be $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
Tickets can be purchased at Buck's Steaks and Bar-B-Que, Local Loan and Pawn, The Flower Box and Gifts and the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.

Broadway Baptist invites children to The Greatest Gift VBS

A summer kids' event called "The Greatest Gift" will be held at Broadway Baptist Church from Sunday, July 27, through Thursday, July 31. The church is located at 710 East Third Street in Sweetwater.
Children will celebrate the "Reason for the Season" at The Greatest Gift, where they will participate in unforgettable Bible-learning activities. Kids will sing holiday songs, play games that promote teamwork, snack on tasty treats and create crafts they can take home to be used as seasonal decoration.

Pioneer Museum gears up for several events

The Pioneer Museum is gearing up for a wide variety of events for children and families in order to share Sweetwater's history to the community.
On August 5 and 6, the “Pioneering the Past: Summer Discovery Camp” will be held at the museum from 10 a.m. to noon. The two-day interactive archaeology camp, with the theme "Life's a Garden, Dig It", is open to students in grades 4 through 8.

I often get asked, “What is your name?” to which I reply, “No, it isn’t.” I get a funny look, so they ask again. I reply with the same answer. Finally, I say, “No is not my name!” I guess I heard the “Who’s on first?” routine too many times. Have you ever given much thought to your name? Who you are named after, and what your name means, etc.? 

Carson Studio hosts Spring awards recital/student awards

Music students of Noreen Carson presented their annual Spring Awards Recital on June 1, the First Baptist Church sanctuary. Performances by piano and guitar students were followed by the presentation of awards in recognition of their accomplishments throughout the 2013-2014 school year.

Roxie Ann Carson Trietsch, 93, formerly of California and Sanger, Texas, (retired) departed this life on July 13, 2014.
“Annie” or “Grannie Annie” as she was known to those who loved her, born Oct. 4, 1920, was one of 12 children born to John and Edna Carson on Indian Territory in Pottawatomie Co., Oklahoma.  
Annie is survived by only one sibling, Francis Retzlaff and husband, Hal Retzlaff (Ret. Master Gunnery Sgt. USMC) of San Jacinto, California.
