Voting precincts, insurance discussed at county meeting

Two issues regarding voting were approved by the Nolan County Commissioners during their meeting held on Tuesday morning, May 29, 2012 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Approval was given toward the elimination of five voting precincts for the county. On March 16 of this year, with the county moving into one district following the state's redistricting process, precincts 10 through 14 were removed.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 200 calls for service, issued 21 citations and made eight arrests from May 25-28, 2012.

The SPD received 124, 911 calls.

• Family violence assault — Sweetwater.

• Theft — 700 block of SW Georgia.

WASP break ground on muesum expansion during Homecoming

The annual WASP Homecoming took place this Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 26, 2012. Several events took place during the weekend including a parade to kick off the event, fly-in, free flights for children, a luncheon, meet and greet and dinner and dance.
A highlight of the weekend was the official groundbreaking ceremony for the WASP Museum's three million dollar expansion. The national museum will house their memorabilia and perpetuate their stories.

Chaos at local church

While a lot of people would steer clear of chaos, a local church is wanting children to take part in the craziness.
4th and Elm Church of Christ is breaking the mold with summertime children's ministries. Instead of the week-long Vacation Bible School (VBS) program, the church's children's coordinator, Melanie Gibson, is announcing CHAOS--a weekly program on Wednesday nights.

County honors fallen heroes

A flag raising ceremony was held at the Nolan County Courthouse on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 2012, to honor those who have fallen in the line of duty.
Raising the flag were members of Team Chip Tae Kwon Do in Sweetwater. The Nolan County Honor Guard is shown during the ceremony giving a gun salute. Pictured are Tommy Millett, Lionel Mendez and Bradley Willman.
A wreath was also placed next to the World War II memorial at the courthouse. The guest speaker was former Chief of Police Jim Kelley, a Vietnam War Veteran.

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Manuel D. Santiago, 89, of Roscoe, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Deacon Bill Butler officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery with United States Army Graveside Honors under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be said by Carlos and Connie Rodriguez on Tuesday, May 29, at 7 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Santiago died Sunday, May 27, 2012, at Sweetwater Healthcare in Sweetwater.

Loyd Edwin Smith

Colorado City — Loyd Edwin Smith, age 86, of Colorado City, died Saturday night in a local hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May, 30, 2012, at the Calvary Baptist Church with Revs. Paul Smith and Jackie Brem officiating. Burial will follow in the Spade Cemetery under the care and direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.

df Ranch Triathlon slated for June 2

The 4th Annual df Ranch Triathlon will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the Lake Sweetwater public boat ramp, located at 326 FM 2035. The event will start at 7:30 a.m. and will be the USA Triathlon Texas State Sprint Championships.
The triathlon will be a timed race that includes a 500-meter swim in the lake, 14 mile bike on a rolling hills course on FM 2035 and a 3.1-mile run on County Road 252.

Scam targets local veterans

Another possible phone scam has made its way to Sweetwater and the surrounding area, but this time local veterans are being targeted.
Mrs. Donald Goodrich from Sweetwater contacted the local authorities and shared the situation about her husband getting a call from a woman who told him that his friend in Abilene was going to court and needed money. She said when the call came through, it appeared as a restricted number.

UPDATE: Three missing persons out of Colorado City are located

According to Colorado City authorities, Brittany Hill, her daughter, Khloe Wheeler and her boyfriend, Rosendo Gonzalez have all been located and picked up. They are safe and in good health.
Information was obtained through a source that Hill and Gonzales had stolen a credit card. The card was traced to a location in Galveston, Texas.
Using cell phone "pings" it was learned that the three were traveling northbound on Interstate 45 toward Houston.
The cell phone pings were monitored until investigators were able to narrow down the location of Hill, Wheeler and Gonzalez.
