Robert McBride, the Nolan County Veterans Service Officer, was recognized as the recipient for the Outstanding Veterans Service Officer of the Year during the Nolan County Commissioners' meeting on Monday morning, October 8, 2012.
In two years, McBride has gone from being the newest Veterans Service Officer in the entire state to becoming the first accredited Veterans Service Officer in the history of Nolan County. He was presented with a plaque during his fall training conference, which recently took place.
Dr. Jerod Peek was welcomed as the incoming board member during the meeting of the SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors, held on Monday morning, October 8, 2012 at the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce building.
Peek is replacing Kyle Lawrence, who also served as board president. The board then approved their new 2012-2013 officers, which will be Arthur Maberry as board president, Billy Whisenant in the role of vice president and Bill Johnson at the position of treasurer.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 27 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on Oct. 8, 2012.
The SPD received 14, 911 calls.

Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s volleyball team suffered a blow to its District 4-3A playoff hopes Tuesday with a 3-0 defeat at Monahans.
The Lady Mustangs were defeated by scores of 17-25, 20-25, 20-25. Monahans improved to 4-2 in district, while Sweetwater fell to 2-4. The Lady Mustangs trail Monahans by two games in the race for the No. 3 playoff spot with just four matches left. Monahans is now 20-16 overall. Sweetwater, which will host last-place Snyder this Friday, has a 22-14 season record.

Nolan County cities Roscoe and Sweetwater are members of Texas Midwest Community Network. The organization hosts the 19th Annual Texas Midwest Conference, Oct. 17, at the Abilene Civic Center. The conference will offer solutions for challenges communities face today and in the future.
Lexie Perez, a senior at Sweetwater High School, auditioned on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, and made the TMEA All-Region Honor Choir. She will represent Sweetwater High School in the Region Concert on Nov. 10 in Lubbock.
She claimed eighth chair which also earned her the right to continue to the next level. She will audition for the next round, Pre-Area, on Nov. 9.
In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Roscoe Fire Department will be wearing pink department shirts all month. "One ofÂ our family members is recovering from breast cancer, so we want everyone to knowÂ that we supportÂ herÂ and everyone effected by theÂ disease," said Roscoe VFD Chief Gary Armstrong.

With the November 6 general election just about a month away, various deadlines are now coming into play. The last day to register to vote for the November election is today, Tuesday, October 9, 2012.
The first day of early voting will be Monday, October 22 in the County Clerk's office--located at the Nolan County Courthouse (100 East Third), Suite 108--from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last day of early voting is Friday, November 2.
The deadline for applying for a ballot by mail--to be received, not postmarked--is on Tuesday, October 30.
