Children's Connections Inc., strengthening families parenting program, has received funding to expand their operations to Sweetwater. The program is funded by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Prevention and Early Intervention Division. Through this extra funding, they are able to serve 10 Texas counties; Fisher, Nolan, Mitchell, Coke, Tom Green, Concho, Garza, Lubbock, Terry and Midland County.

JavaJax coffee bar in Sweetwater brought in two acts on Saturday evening. Performing together were Will T. Massey and fiddler Richard Bowden. This was their first visit to JavaJax. Bowden did not grow up in West Texas. He moved to Lubbock in the 1970s and spent over 10 years in the Lubbock music scene. Bowden played approximately 10 years with the The Main Brothers Band in Lubbock as the fiddler and mandolin player in the group.
ROBY — Vernon R. “Cotton” Allen, 80, former resident of Fisher County now of Snyder, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at Mitchell County Hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Roby. Burial will follow at Roby Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Saturday from 5-6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
The girls regular season is over and the high school basketball playoffs are almost here. But so far, only one Nolan County team has secured a postseason berth. However, the Roscoe boys can join the Highland girls in the playoffs with a win tonight at Munday. Roscoe and Munday are currently tied for third place in District 9-A, Division I with 5-4 records. Tonight’s winner advances to the postseason. The game will end the regular season for both squads. In the first meeting between the teams, Roscoe won 54-46.
The Highland girls basketball team is in the Class 1A playoffs for the 10th straight year and has a warmup game at Stamford at 8 p.m. today. Highland will begin the playoffs at 7 p.m. Tuesday with a bi-district game against Robert Lee in Bronte. Highland finished as the runnerup in District 11-A, Division II with a 10-2 record and is 19-10 overall.

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E. 12th, on Thursday, Feb. 17, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. to offer free cholesterol screening. There will be pamphlets and information available on cholesterol.
SNCHD will be closed on Monday, Feb. 21, for President’s Day.
Immunization clinics are held every Wednesday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. and the second Wednesday of each month until 6 p.m.Â
The staff at Buck's Steaks and Bar-B-Que showed their support on Friday, Feb. 4, Wear Red Day in Nolan County by wearing their red American Heart Association T-shirts. Texas State Technical College System announces its search for the next president of TSTC West Texas. Gail Lawrence has served in an interim capacity since former president, Mike Reeser, was chosen to serve as the TSTC System Chancellor/CEO on Nov. 4, 2010.
The Chancellor seeks a person of vision and action whose experience demonstrates the capacity to provide transformational leadership for the college.
Speaker Joe Straus announced the Texas House committee assignments for the 82nd Legislative Session. Rep. Susan L. King was honored to once again be selected to serve on the Appropriations and Public Health Committees. In addition, Rep. King was also appointed to serve on the House Administration Committee.
