Wear Red Day events planned

On Friday, Feb. 4, wearing red won't just be for showing off that Mustang pride.
Judge Tim Fambrough has issued a proclamation for Feb. 4, to be declared as National Wear Red Day® in Nolan County, in an effort to promote women's health and increase awareness of heart disease in women.
According to the proclamation, heart disease is the number one killer of women. One in four American women dies of heart disease, due in part that many women are unaware of the problem, leading to a lack of concern.

Fundraiser held for local softball team

This past Sunday marked the first fundraiser of the year for West Texas Heat. The traveling girls softball team is based out of Sweetwater and is made up of 13 girls from Sweetwater, Snyder, Roby, Colorado City, Hawley and Stanford. This year will be their first year competing in the 14 and under age group. Last year the girls’ record was 83-8 and two ties. They brought home first place in their biggest tournament called Goliath held in Carlsbad, New Mexico, where teams from six different states competed. The team hopes to participate again this summer.

Shane Gholson, age 39, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, in San Angelo, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at Normandy Avenue Church of Christ with Mike Ensminger officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

SW, B-Spring will try again to play today

February 2, 2011

After the icy weather that moved in late Monday night forced the cancellation of their games here Tuesday, Sweetwater and Big Spring will try again to play their varsity doubleheader today. As of early today, the varsity girls game is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Mustang Gym, followed by the varsity boys game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday’s JV and freshman games were not rescheduled.

The Sweetwater High School freshman girls basketball team has a 13-5 overall record this season and is 3-2 in district play. Lifters shine at Lamesa

The Sweetwater High School girls placed first and the SHS boys placed second on Saturday at the Lamesa powerlifting meet.
The girls put on a domi-nant showing at Lamesa as Sweetwater’s 45 points more than doubled the 19 by Colorado City, which came in a distant second.

ERCOT: Statewide rolling power outages ordered to conserve energy

HOUSTON—The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has instructed utilities to begin rotating outages to compensate for a generation shortage due to numerous plant trips that occurred because of the extreme weather.
Rotating outages are controlled, temporary interruptions of electric service, typically lasting 10-45 minutes per neighborhood. The locations and durations are determined by the local utilities. Critical need customers such as hospitals and nursing homes are generally not included.
It is not known at this time how long the need for rotating outages will last.

Nolan County roadways remain hazardous

As of 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, all streets and roadways in Nolan County remain very hazardous.
Any and all travel, of any distance, is highly discouraged.  Nolan County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Texas DPS Troopers are overwhelmed with numerous accidents and stalled or stranded vehicles.

SHS opens homestand vs. B-Spring

Sweetwater High School’s basketball teams, who have been idle for the past week, are scheduled to be back on the court today when they play host to Big Spring at Mustang Gym — but only if the expected snowy and wet conditions outside allow it.
Both Sweetwater teams have two home games on their schedule this week, as Wylie is in town Friday.

SMS boys team is the only winner

February 1, 2011

Sweetwater Middle School’s seventh grade White boys team was the only local basketball winner at Big Spring on Thursday.
Sweetwater White won 23-21 as Isaiah Gonzales had 11 points to lead the way. Adan Sanchez and Matthew Trevino had four points and Andrew Briley and Adrian Salazar two.
The other SMS seventh grade boys team narrowly missed picking up a victory as the Red team lost to Big Spring 25-24.
Michael Hunt had eight points to pace Sweetwater’s effort, while Michael Lawrence scored six, Denzell Moore and Max Gomez each had four points and Cornelio Mendez two.
