The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 57 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on July 3, 2012.

The SPD received 55, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft— 500 block of Lamar.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male Juvenile, 12 — Arson.
• Male Juvenile, 12 — Arson.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served three civil papers and made four arrests on July 3, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Jeffrey Wayne Keith, 45, of Abilene — Jones County warrants/surety withdrawal and bond forfeiture.

Geraldine "Jerry" Doris Smith Williams

July 5, 2012

Graveside services for Geraldine "Jerry" Doris Smith Williams, 84, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Crews Cemetery near Winters, TX, with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Friday evening July 6, 2012, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Williams died Thursday, July 5, 2012, at Sweetwater Healthcare Center in Sweetwater, TX.

SW teams reach finals

July 5, 2012

ABILENE — Sweetwater will be represented in two of the final three District 5 Little League all-star championship games today after semifinal wins on Tuesday.
Sweetwater’s 13-14 year-old all-stars will take on Abilene South at 7 p.m. in the Junior League final at Abilene Wylie after beating Abilene North, 6-5, in their semifinal.

Two dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has two more dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male and a female, both mixed breed dogs. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Three bodies reportedly found at Alamo Street home

July 4, 2012

Officers of the Sweetwater Police Department were alerted to the 1100 block of Alamo Street in Sweetwater close to noon on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, when a call came in to the station about three bodies being found in a residence on that street.
The Sweetwater Fire Department was also called and had several units at the residence, but soon left the residence.
According to authorities, everything was okay at the residence as a person who had delivered a meal to the house was off of prescribed medication and thought he saw dead bodies.

Local team wins state tournament

July 4, 2012

The 10 and under all stars from Sweetwater Fastpitch recently competed in the state tournament in McKinney Texas. The team ended up being state champions. The girls are Zoe Cornett, Alicia Gomez, Madison Hernandez, Zoee Jeffrey, Elli Lehnert, Kendale Orozco, Liberty Saenz, Mia Valdez, Rose Vera, Jazi Villa and Kaci Webb. Coaches are Ryan Jeffrey, Adrian Gomez, Samantha Webb and Chris Gomez.

FFB grills it up for the Fourth of July

First Financial Bank offered grilled goodies to their customers on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at their motor bank to celebrate Independence Day. They grilled up hot dogs and chicken and also served lemonade. Shown above is Connie Saenz handing goodies to a customer.

RISD applies for Texas High Performance Schools Consortium

Roscoe ISD (Independent School District) has applied for the Texas High Performance Schools Consortium through the TEA (Texas Education Agency).
The Consortium, according to the TEA website, is "a group of up to 20 districts and open-enrollment charter schools charged with informing the governor, legislature, and commissioner of education concerning methods for transforming public schools through the development of innovative, next-generation learning standards, assessment, and accountability systems."

Celebrate America’s independence today

Today, Old Glory is flying, as its spectators might be carrying a bit more pride within them. The melody of the Star-Spangled Banner resonates loudly or perhaps in their minds. July 4th--Independence Day in America, can be called a symbol of patriotism for Americans as they enjoy a day off from work.
But how was the day incepted? Several events and dates paved the way for America to celebrate her birthday--all the way back to April 1775 when the first battles of the Revolutionary War began and a handful of people craved independence from England.

The SPD received 58, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft— 300 block of E. Alabama.

Arrested by SPD:
• Lewis Hill, 37 — Driving while license invalid with previous conviction.
• Deanna Howard, 18 — Driving while license invalid with previous conviction.
• Dalton Dauel, 21 — Theft/warrant.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 15 calls for service, served no civil papers and made one arrest on July 2, 2012.
