RPMH offers injury prevention and bicycle and helmet safety tips

Warm weather is right around the corner, which is all the more reason to get outside and be active. A great way to get some exercise and have fun is going for a bike ride. Did you know, every year, 350,000 children under age 15 go to hospital emergency rooms with bike-related injuries. Of that number, 130,000 children suffer head injuries and an estimated 200 die. By wearing a helmet, a child can reduce their risk of injury by as much as 85 percent. The single most effective safety device available to reduce head injury and death from bicycle crashes is a helmet.

‘Stangs travel after going 3-1 at Classic

After compiling a 3-1 record during the team’s first homestand of the 2012 baseball season while hosting its Wood Bat Classic, Sweetwater hits the road today for a 7 p.m. game at Midland Greenwood.
After picking up three straight wins at the Classic held at Newman Park by an aggregate score of 28-2, Sweetwater lost in its final game Saturday to the Ran-ger Junior College JV, 12-8.
The Mustangs (5-4-1) started out their tournament Friday with shutout wins over both Post (14-0) and Wall (2-0), then routed Clyde 12-2 Saturday before losing to Ranger’s JV team.

More phone scams hit Sweetwater

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) wants to make the public aware of another recent phone scam that can have harsh financial consequences.
Detective Melinda Moncada with the SPD noted this new line of scamming has been ongoing for around a month. Scammers are calling and convincing residents that they can get a new car along with $1 million by purchasing a Wal-Mart money card and loading it with a considerable amount of money. Once the card is loaded, the callers then activate it and gain access to the funds by transferring them to another card.

State Farm agencies host open houses

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors welcomed Richard Fergeson State Farm, located at 808 E. Broadway, to Sweetwater with a ribbon cutting. He is shown (center) cutting the ribbon along with his wife, Kaitlin and their new baby Macy Jane. Food and drinks were offered to those attending the event.

Voter registration , redistricting concerns addressed

The state redistricting debacle has not only making an impact on the state's presidential primary this year, but also on the local races.
However, with the recent announcement that the Texas presidential primary date has been set for Tuesday, May 29, Kathy Bowen with the Nolan County Tax Office wants to assist voters in the interim while putting some rumors to rest.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 51 calls for service, issued five citations and made no arrests on March 1, 2012.

The SPD received 21, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a habitation — 1000 block of Beall.
• Criminal mischief — 400 block of Alexander.
• Family violence assault — 1600 block of Grand.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served no civil papers and made four arrests on March 1, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Donald Charles Prater, Jr., 29, of Loraine — Tarrant County warrant/possession of marijuana.

Adlie S. (Bud) Smith

Sweetwater, Texas — Adlie S. (Bud) Smith, Jr., 87, passed away Friday, March 2, 2012, at his daughter’s home in Conroe, Texas. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 6, 2012, from 5-7 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home. Graveside service and burial will be Wednesday March 7, at 11 a.m. at Garden of Memories. Rev. James Baker will officiate with McCoy Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Bud was born April 3, 1924 in Dallas, Texas, to Adlie and Alice Smith. He was raised in McCaulley, Texas with four siblings. He graduated McCaulley High School in 1942 and joined the US Army Air Corps.

Guyna Bea (Davis) Cherry

Guyna Bea (Davis) Cherry, age 83, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Brownlow and Doug Crum officiating. Burial will follow at Roby Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Guyna was born June 8, 1928, in Roby, Texas to Guyon Jarrett and Beatrice (Hubbard) Davis.
