Southeast first graders give Christmas program

December 17, 2011

Southeast Elementary School first graders put on quite a Christmas show, “The Littlest Christmas Tree,” with many of the students in costumes with speaking and singing parts. Many attended the play at the Sweetwater High School Auditorium on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011.

Infigen Energy donates to Sweetwater Goodfellows

Durwood O. Whitefield

Durwood Whitefield passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at home in Kerrville with his wife at his bedside.
Durwood was the only child of Orville Whitefield and Rachel Harper Whitefield. He was born in Sweetwater, TX, on July 1, 1929.
After graduating from high school in Sweetwater in 1947, Durwood served two years in the U.S. Army. He then worked his way through Sul Ross State College, Alpine, TX, receiving his Bachelor of science degree in geology in 1958. Durwood met his wife, Earlene Anderson, while in college. They were married March 27, 1959, in Alpine, TX.

Roscoe Girl Scouts hold toy drive

Roscoe Girl Scout Troop #7305 recently held a toy drive. Pictured left to right are Leandra DeLeon, Haylee Schriber, Jaleigh Morales, Logan Wicker, Taylor Chavez and standing is Veronica Cuellar. Toys are donated to Roscoe's Spirit of Christmas program.

Abilene resident wins one year’s worth of free electricity

It was a last-minute decision by Rachel Ramirez to enter her husband, Antonio, into the “Light My Home for the Holidays,” a contest sponsored by KTXS and WTU Retail Energy. “Good thing she did,” he said.
Abilene resident Antonio Ramirez, 43, was chosen as the winner of one year’s worth of free electricity from WTU during the annual KTXS Christmas Lights Parade on Nov. 29. His free year, up to $3,000, begins in January.
Ramirez, a truck driver, said the announcement came as a big surprise and a great relief.

Free counseling available for children affected by wildfires

For children and adolescents whose lives were affected by this year's Texas wildfires, the holiday season may bring added anxiety, especially if they lost their home, pets, or treasured possessions and holiday keepsakes.
In some instances children may be experiencing survivor guilt because their home was left unharmed in the wildfires, while those of friends or family were completely destroyed.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 42 calls for service, issued four citations and made three arrests on Dec. 14, 2011.

The SPD received 21, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 600 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 600 block of Lamar.
• Burglary of a vehicle/criminal mischief — 1500 block of James.
• Information only — 900 block of Roscoe.
• Obstruction/retaliation — 100 block of Bales.
• Information only — 200 block of E. Fourth.

Arrested by SPD:
• Christian Coppler, 30 — Driving while license invalid.
• Cody Farley, 19 — Warrant.
• Olga Torrez, 18 — Warrants.

William "Bill" W. Adkins

William "Bill" W. Adkins, age 80, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011 at Hendrick Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at Broadway Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Bill was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Loco, Texas. He was a truck driver for many years before retiring. He also was a member of Broadway Baptist Church.

Boys at home, but girls travel

Sweetwater’s boys basket-ball teams will be at home today, while the girls travel to Ballinger.
The Mustangs (5-9) will try to end a three-game los-ing streak when they play host to Bangs starting at 7:30 p.m. Freshman and JV games are also on tap today at 4:30 and 6 p.m.
