Netters bring home 7 medals

The Sweetwater High School tennis team brought home seven medals at a one-day tournament last Thursday in Brownwood.
Sweetwater’s winners were the mixed doubles team of Chris Hernandez and Madison Meneses; the ‘B’ girls doubles team of Vida Gamez and Teresa Perez Poe; and Shannon Gray in ‘C’ girls singles.
Taking second for Sweet-water was the boys doubles ‘B’ team of Zac Bax and Billy Reeves, while the ‘A’ boys doubles team of Isaiah Hernandez and Bryan Vause finished third in their category.
Sweetwater’s next tour-nament will be March 23-24 at Levelland.

Mustangs beaten by Andrews

After losing five games to bad weather this past week at the Abilene tournament, the Sweetwater High School baseball team hosted a tough Andrews squad on Monday.
Unfortunately, the visi-ting Mustangs took the lead with a five-run third inning and left town with a 13-2, six-inning victory at Newman Park.
Andrews finished with 15 hits off three Sweetwater pitchers as the Mustangs’ record fell to 6-5-1.
Sweetwater will be back on the road to face Wall at 11 a.m. Friday for its final pre-district game. The team will host Wylie in its 5-3A opener next Tuesday.

Rattlesnake Round-Up results announced

An estimated crowd of 30,000 attended the 54th Annual Sweetwater Jaycees World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up.
The total pounds of Western Diamondback Rattlesnake weighed totaled 1,664 pounds, a decrease from last year's total of 1,841 pounds. Those bringing in the most pounds of rattlesnake were first place Andy Lee with 348 pounds, second place Eric Timaeus with 224 pounds and third place Bill Stinson with 207 pounds. The longest rattlesnake was caught by Eric Timaeus and measured 73 inches long.

Two blood drives in Sweetwater on March 15

The Meek Blood Center bloodmobiles will be at the Nolan County Courthouse and the Lions Club building on Thursday, March 15, 2012, from noon until 6 p.m.
Meek Blood Center recently revised their guidelines regarding many medications and medical conditions, which will qualify more people as blood donors. Those who have been deferred for medications and medical conditions in the past are asked to call 325-670-2798 to inquire about eligibility.

Drunk drivers beware on Spring Break

Texas Highway Patrol troopers will increase patrols and crack down on drunk drivers during a special enforcement effort over Spring Break.
The increased patrols will be in effect across the state from March 10 to March 18 in high-risk locations during the times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent. The patrols are funded through a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation targeting impaired driving.

Three SHS lifters going to state meet

Three Sweetwater High School athletes — Sam Nemir, Ryan Linebaugh and Mateo Gonzales — will compete in the 2012 boys state powerlifting meet. This year’s meet will be March 24 in Abilene.
All three athletes qualified for state by placing among the top two lifters in their weight class at Friday’s Region I, Division 2 Class 3A meet held at Sundown.

Hatcher is alternate

Corey Hatcher of Roscoe will be a state alternate after placing third in the 220-pound class Saturday at the boys Region I, Division 3 meet held in Sundown. Hatcher had a lift of 1,365 pounds with a 550-pound squad, 300-pound bench press and 515-pound dead lift. Landon Jones (1,120) placed seventh for Roscoe in the 181-pound class while Jose Rangel did not place in the 165-pound class.

Children’s Art Show held at County-City Library

The Artist of the Month of March at the County-City Library is not just one person with a specific kind of art.
There are actually 153 Artists of the Month, featuring a wide variety of media styles.
The West Texas Art Guild recently sponsored a Children's Art Show at the local library, with the youngest artist being three years old spanning all the way to 18 years old. The applicants were broken down into five age groups (3-5 years; 6-8 years; 9-11 years; 12-14 years; and 15-18 years).

Mary Helen Smith Munroe

Helen Munroe, 95, passed from this life on March 6, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Chino, California. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 12, 2012, at Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel in Plainview, Texas. Helen was a member of 9th & Columbia Church of Christ. Minister Evan Weiss will officiate the memorial service. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview.
