BRONTE – Harriet Lee Tucker, 85, of Blackwell, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at a Lubbock hospital. There is no visitation. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2012 in Blackwell Cemetery. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home.

Raymond Andrew Hughes

Raymond Andrew Hughes, 89, of Sweetwater, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2012.
He was born on August 1, 1922 in Necessity, TX to William Hughes and Betty Hodges Hughes. He married Eleanor Smith on June 3, 1959, and was a WWII Veteran. He proudly served in the United States Army. 
A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Memorial Park.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eleanor; son, David Hughes; and daughter, Sulynn Hughes-Husbands.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

Geraldine Marie Goodman

Graveside services for Geraldine Marie Goodman, 68, of Sweetwater, will be held at Sweetwater Cemetery on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at 3 p.m. with Rev. Diane Brown Officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Goodman died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
She was born in Muleshoe, Texas on April 30, 1944. She was married to Herbert Lee Goodman.

Letter carriers help stamp out hunger

The National Association of Letter Carriers will be having their annual food drive on Saturday, May 12. This Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

National filmmaker to premiere controversial film in Abilene theater

A national filmmaker is bringing an international issue to a local theater through his latest project.
"Murder Capital of the World", an intense documentary from director Charlie Minn which highlights the drug war in Juarez, Mexico and its growing atrocities, will be premiering this weekend at the Premiere Cinema theater, located at the Mall of Abilene. The film will have a minimum run of one week starting this Friday, May 11 at 11:30 a.m. with weekend showtimes every two hours until 9:30 p.m.; weekday showtimes will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the same schedule.

DECA teams honored at school board meeting

A resolution honoring the 2012 Sweetwater High School DECA Teams State and National Qualifiers was presented at the recent Sweetwater ISD School Board Meeting.
Pictured receiving the resolution are  (l to r) Belinda Hefner, Spencer Young, Adrian Lopez, Gabriel Medellin, Alex Garcia, Christopher Gonzales and Cesar Arellano. Also in attendance was the SHS Principal Stacy Jones. 
Other DECA recipients not pictured are  Kinsey Browning, Kensi Jones, Bryson Wallace, Kaylen Whittenburg and Hailey Wilkinson.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 55 calls for service, issued seven citations and made two arrests on May 8, 2012.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Family violence assault — Sweetwater.
• Burglary of a building — 500 block of E. Avenue A.
• Theft — 1000 block of W. 8th.
• Theft — 400 block of NE Georgia.

Arrested by SPD:
• Ashley Runnels, 30 — Possession of a controlled substance.
• Justin Logston, 31 — Possession of a controlled substance.

Joyce Lynn Presswood Smith

Joyce Lynn Presswood Smith, 74, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2012 in Abilene. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2012 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Burial will follow at noon in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Alon gas pumps coming to Sweetwater

Alon gas pumps will soon be popping up at local 7-11 gas stations. Alon purchased hundreds of 7-11's in the region that sell Fina gasoline. Last week, Alon signs were put up at local 7-11 convenience stores. While the name will change from Fina to Alon, the curved red, white and blue stripes will remain the same.
