Final City Commission Meeting for 2011

The City Commission met for their final regular meeting of 2011 on Tuesday morning, December 13, 2011 at City Hall.
City Manager Eddie Brown, in his report to the commission, noted that sales tax revenue for the month of November increased over the same period last year by $109,042.26.
He stated that he and the city staff have been looking into the situation and have been working with the State Comptroller to determine if the numbers are possibly an error. However, on Tuesday afternoon, the State Comptroller's office confirmed to city staff that the sales tax numbers are valid.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 46 calls for service, issued one citation and made zero arrests on Dec. 13, 2011.

The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 100 block of S Hopkins.
• Assault — 300 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 1600 block of Cypress.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served one civil paper and made two arrests on Dec. 13, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Herlinda Alvarez Arizmendi, 48, of Snyder — Warrant/theft by check.
• Felipe DeJesus Aguinaga, 33, of Dallas — Warrant/motion to revoke probation.

Joe C. “Shorty” Blackburn Jr.

Joe Calvin “Shorty” Blackburn, Jr. passed away on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at Shannon Memorial Hospital in San Angelo, Texas.
Funeral services will be Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories at 10 a.m. with Rev. Daniel Dotson Officiating. Interment will be beside his wife at Blackwell Cemetery directed by McCoy Funeral Home. There will be a family visitation on Sunday evening at McCoy Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.
Shorty was born to Joe C. Blackburn, Sr. and Esther Fannin on Jan. 1, 1929. This coming new year he would have been 83 years old.

Hornets win honors

Four Blackwell Hornet sophomore football players have earned second team all-district six-man honors in District 8, Division II.
Chosen on offense were Mason Magness at wide receiver and Jayden Jones at running back. Also named were Kaleb Edwards at cornerback and Ted Chambliss as a defensive lineman.

Area girls hoop teams get W

Roscoe’s teams split their basketball doubleheader at Albany on Tuesday, while the Highland and Blackwell girls both came away with victories in their respective district openers.
Roscoe’s girls beat Albany 33-32 in a double-overtime thriller to improve to 8-6, but the state-ranked Albany boys easily won against the Roscoe boys, 56-12. Black-well’s girls beat Veribest 37-10, and the state-ranked Highland girls beat Herm-leigh 44-25.

JV boys lose but freshmen notch win

Breckenridge led 17-4 at halftime, then held off a mild comeback for a 28-20 win on Tuesday over Sweetwater’s JV boys. But the freshman boys won their game, 33-20, at Breckenridge’s gym.
The JV boys (10-4) out-scored Breckenridge 8-2 in the third quarter to get within eight points, 19-12, but couldn’t maintain their momentum. Quentin Wet-sel had seven points to lead Sweetwater while Marquees Jenkins and Trey Taylor had four, Deandre Gatson three and Brandon Sutton two.

Band Members Win Honors

Last Saturday six members of the Sweetwater High School Band traveled to Lubbock to audition for All-Region honors. All six students won positions in the All-Region Band. Sweetwater had the third most students out of twenty-eight participating schools.
Students making All-Region were junior Laura Duclos – baritone, junior Briana Rosas – trombone, freshman Clay Kitchens – trumpet, sophomore Stephen Le – French horn, Sophomore Chase Scott – alto saxophone, and sophomore Crysten Ivy – clarinet. The All-Region Band will present a concert at Lubbock-Cooper High School on Saturday, January 29th.

Pets available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has six pets available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a blonde male lab mix. Another is a female brown chihuahua. Also available is a male blue heeler puppy as well as a brown female heeler puppy. A male pointer mix, colored brown and white is up for adoption as well. Another brown and white male mix breed is available for adoption to a loving home. According to Sweetwater's new animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.

SEED Board of Directors Meeting

The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors met for their monthly meeting on Monday morning, December 12, 2011 at the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
Jim Clements with Oncor attended the meeting to discuss two issues: an update on the CREZ transmission project and the SEED Business Park lighting.
With five substations, a majority of the CREZ line has been completed. From a more narrow perspective, the local area has already been energized.

Nolan County Commissioners Meet

December 14, 2011

The Nolan County Commissioners met for their regular meeting on Monday morning, December 12, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse, with several presentations being made on a variety of matters.
Three county residents presented an ongoing situation on County Road 235 to the court about several vehicles that drive at excessive speeds. Currently, no speed limit or warning signs are posted on the road.
