The Highland girls will be in the playoffs for the 11th consecutive year after defeating Loraine, 63-52, on Friday behind a 34-point effort from Sierra Allen.
Lora Stewart and Jes-sica McCain each had nine, Beth Richburg and Megan Thompson four and Kara Hughey three for Highland (8-2 in District 11-A, Divis-ion II, 20-7 overall).
Roscoeâ€™s girls also helped their playoff chances Friday, pulling into a third-place tie by beating Haskell 34-29 in District 9-A, Division I. The teams are both 3-4.

AUSTINâ€”Miles and miles of Texas highway will soon see speed limit increases following Thursdayâ€™s Texas Transportation Commission action approving 75 mph designations for close to 1,500 miles of interstate.
The speed limit changes span 60 Texas counties making it the largest conversion since a new law was passed last year. The 82nd Texas Legislature passed and the Governor signed House Bill 1353 which allows the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to establish 75 mph speed limits on Texas highways providing speed studies show it can be done safely.
On Sunday afternoon, Jan. 22, 2012 local handlers and their dogs passed the TDI test to become Certified Therapy Dogs. Lisa Peterson was the instructor for the course.
Therapy Dogs International (TDIÂ®) is a volunteer organization dedicated to regulating, testing and registration of therapy dogs and their volunteer handlers for the purpose of visiting nursing homes, hospitals, other institutions and wherever else therapy dogs are needed.
TDI registers all breeds of dogs. Some dogs have pedigrees, while others have been adopted from local shelters or are rescue dogs.
While working to improve the lives of so many in Nolan County, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is receiving some vital help as well. The hospital has recently launched a renovation project that will increase the hospitalâ€™s energy efficiency and improve the medical/surgical wing.
â€śA lot has changed in the way buildings consume energy since our facility was first built more than 36 years ago,â€ť said Donna Boatright, administrator of RPMH. â€śThe impact of our renovations not only lowers our energy use, but also enhances our patientsâ€™ experience at our facility.â€ť
The West Texas Art Guild is sponsoring a Childrenâ€™s art show at the County-City Library on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012. The show will be divided into five age groups including ages 3-5, ages 6-8, ages 9-11, ages 12-14 and ages 15-18.
Name and age of the child must be attached to the back of the artwork. Ribbons will be awarded to first, second and third places, as well as honorable mention winners. One Best-Of-Show ribbon for the over-all best artwork will be awarded. All work must be matted and ready to hang.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on Jan. 25, 2012.
The SPD received 18, 911 calls.

A graveside service for Dillard Royce McCain, 56, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012, at Slaterâ€™s Chapel Cemetery in Nolan with Rev. Billy Oliver officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at McCoy Funeral Home.
McCain died Thursday. Jan. 26, 2012, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
