Two enter guilty pleas

Two entered guilty pleas during 32nd Judicial District Court on Tuesday, June 5, 2012. The cases were prosecuted by District Attorney Ann Reed and Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas. Judge Glen Harrison presided over the cases.
Malcom Xavier Black, with attorney, Jacob Blizzard, pled guilty to prohibited substance in a correctional facility, a third degree felony. For his plea, Black received three years of community supervision and will have to pay a $2,000 fine, $309 in court costs and $500 in attorney's fees. He will also have to serve 160 hours of community service.

SHS Band recognized by school board

June 7, 2012

The Sweetwater High School Band was recognized during the May SISD school board meeting for earning the coveted Sweepstakes ranking during the 2011-12 school year.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 49 calls for service, issued eight citations and made three arrests on June 5, 2012.

The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a vehicle — 1700 block of Bristol.
• Missing person — 900 block of W. 10th.

Arrested by SPD:
• Bruce McKinney, 30 — Criminal trespass.
• Sonya Flores, 25 — Warrants.
• Nikki McAfee, 32 — Possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 12 calls for service, served two civil papers and made no arrests on June 5, 2012.

Cancer Services Network to broadcast workshop

June 6, 2012

Cancer Services Network (CSN) plans to broadcast CancerCare’s Connect® Workshop Part III of Cancer Survivorship: Living With, Though, and Beyond Cancer. This workshop entitled Changing Roles and Responsibilities for Caregivers is scheduled on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, from noon to 1:30 p.m. This session is for cancer survivors, their families and friends. Information will be shared to help them cope with concerns that arise after treatment.

NCF donates to SNAP

June 6, 2012

The Nolan County Foundation recently donated $5,000 to the City of Sweetwater Senior Nutritional Activities Program (SNAP). The funds are to be matched by the City of Sweetwater and will be used to purchase fixtures and other items needed by SNAP. The congregate program is temporarily occupied in the Trail of Lights building across the parking lot from the old structure.

SNCHD welcomes “Buzzy the Bee”

The Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department welcomes “Buzzy the Bee” to the staff. Buzzy will help promote the health department's immunization program. Children will have an opportunity to meet him during Immunization Fun Days this summer.
SNCHD will be at the library on Wednesday, June 13 at 10 a.m. to do story time for Kindergarten through third grade children.

W.T. “Dub” Johnson

June 6, 2012

W.T. “Dub” Johnson, 85, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Abilene Regional Hospital in Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Sweetwater, officiated by Rev. Brian Brownlow. Interment will follow at the Hamlin Memorial Cemetery in Hamlin, Texas. A visitation will be held Friday, June 8, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Pallbearers at the service will be Jake Johnson, Justin Johnson, Gary Wiseman, Mike Fernandez, Bill Shuttleworth, Steven Snell and Will Snell.

Eileen Morrow

June 6, 2012

Eileen Morrow passed away in San Antonio on Monday, June 4, 2012, at the age of 87. She was born in Maryneal, Texas on Oct. 26, 1924, to Ben and Willie Ham.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Imogene Parker; and her son-in-law, Jerry Pickar.
Eileen worked for Atlantic Richfield/BP Oil Company in Midland for 37 years. She loved to line dance and even taught senior citizen classes. She also enjoyed gardening the land surrounding her home.
