RPMH swears in new board member

The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday evening, Oct. 24, 2011 at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
Representatives from First Financial Trust were in attendance to inform the board of the status of their accounts. A review of the markets and the impact felt following the 2008 financial crisis was given, which in turn has affected the rise and fall of rates.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 30 calls for service, issued no citations and made one arrest on Oct. 24, 2011.

The SPD received 17, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 1000 block of Fowler.
• 600 block of E. 12th.
• 1700 block of Sam Houston.

Calls for service:
• Information only — 400 block of Fisher.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male juvenile, 16 — Possession of marijuana.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, served two civil papers and made three arrests on Oct. 24, 2011.

County reinstates burn ban

The Nolan County Commissioners met for their regular meeting on Monday morning, Oct. 24, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse, where the burn ban for the county was reinstated.
The burn ban will remain in effect for the next two weeks until the next regular appointed meeting, where the item will be considered again.

Roscoe VFD talks fire prevention

The Roscoe Fire Department had a fire prevention day at Roscoe ISD and Highland ISD on Friday Oct. 21, 2011. Students had the chance to see what a firefighter in full gear looks like. Shown is Roscoe Fire Chief Gary Armstrong speaking with children about fire safety and prevention.

Veterans Outreach Program ends early, leaving several jobless

At the end of last year the Texas Veterans Commission provided a grant to the Goodwill of West Texas.
"The first cycle that we earned was scheduled to end the 31st of October," explains Coordinator of Veterans Services, Chuck Wilson.
However, Goodwill cut the program two weeks sooner than that scheduled date, leaving employees out of a job.
"It came as a shock," says former employee Arlanda Knight.
Former employees say the loss to the city of Abilene is an unfortunate one.
Knight says, "The sad part about it is we are actually losing a great resource in this community."

‘American Hoggers’ features Brown County family

Feral hogs are taking over the Texas countryside and Brown County resident Jerry Campbell is doing his best to rid the state of this costly nuisance. Last week, America got their first look at the Campbell family in their own reality show, “American Hoggers”, which premiered Wednesday, Oct. 19, on the A&E Network. The show features the Campbell family and their adventures as they struggle to rescue Texas residents and ranchers from the devastating chaos caused by millions of invasive wild boars, states A&E.

The SPD received 73, 911 calls.

• Family violence assault — 200 block of E. Avenue C.

• Male juvenile, 16 — Directive to apprehend.
• Bruce McKinney, 29 — Drive on out of state license.

Stephen Edward (Steve) McGinley

Stephen Edward (Steve) McGinley, age 60, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at his residence.
His body was cremated. No formal services are planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Steve was born Sept. 26, 1951, in Sweetwater, Texas to D.E. (Jack) and Nancy (Neeper) McGinley. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad for many years before retiring. He married Nellie Ramon on Sept. 27, 1976 in Sweetwater, Texas.

Lady Stangs need a win in finale

Sweetwater will host first-place Wylie in its final Dis-trict 5-3A volleyball match at 6:30 p.m. today. But if the Lady Mustangs (3-4 dis-trict, 19-18 overall) can pull off an upset, they have a chance to extend their sea-son beyond today.
Big Spring and Brown-wood, who are both 4-3, are tied for second place in district and face each other this Friday. The winner will claim the No. 2 seed in Dis-trict 5-3A. The loser, how-ever, faces a play-in against Sweetwater for the No. 3 spot if the Lady Mustangs upset Wylie (7-0), the No. 1 seed out of the district.
