BROWNWOOD — After pulling within eight points of Brownwood with 6:52 left and then forcing the Lions to start consecutive possessions from inside their 5-yard line, Sweetwater was poised to complete a rainy fourth-quarter comeback here Friday.
Clinging to a 21-13 lead, Brownwood was pinned at its 2 after a 47-yard punt by Sweetwater quarterback Kaegan Jeffrey with 4:08 to play. But the Lions went to their wildcat formation, and Eddie Duque raced 95 yards before finally being dragged down at Sweetwater’s 3.
Roscoe kicked off District 7-1A, Division II play with a 14-0 win over Baird’s Bears on Friday. The big news? Not only was it the team’s first win, but also Roscoe’s first victory since late in the 2010 season.
Roscoe (1-3) got touch-downs from Eduardo Gal-legos and Vincent Pantoja, and the defense shut down Baird (1-3) to complete the victory. The Bears finished with just 157 yards.
Pantoja gave the Plowboys a 6-0 lead when he scored on a 16-yard run in the first quarter.
Sweetwater’s freshman football team improved to 4-1 by defeating Brownwood 16-6 here Thursday.
Max Gomez threw touchdown passes of 80 yards to Michael Lawrence and 30 yards to Scott Warner, plus a two-point pass to Adrian Vizzerra, and Corey Mendez had a safety. On defense, Lawrence had two interceptions and West one, and Israel Vera, Branson Guelker, Daniel Maldonado, Warner, Den-zell Moore, Vizzerra and Mendez were the other defensive standouts.
