LUBBOCK â€” The Sweet-water girls golf team enters todayâ€™s final round of the Region I-3A tournament at Lubbockâ€™s Meadowbrook Golf Course in sixth place after shooting a 375 in Mon-dayâ€™s opening round.
Jodie May shot 91 to pace Sweetwaterâ€™s effort while Katie High shot 93, Sarah Witt 94, Elise Lawrence 97 and Alex Gomez 99.
Andrews (328) currently leads the team standings by two shots over Snyder, with Burkburnett two more shots back at 332. Pecos is fourth with a 344 total and Monahans (349) is in cur-rently in fifth place.
Faron McCain of Sweetwater, Texas caught a 14.94 pound largemouth bass on April 14, 2011 at Lake O.H. Ivie. The Texas Parks and Wildlife ShareLunker Program was dispatched to the Concho Park Marina to document and transport the bass to their hatchery in Athens, Tx.
McCainâ€™s fish was the third largest ShareLunker Program fish of the year, which runs from October 1 through April 30. Sean Swank of De Berry, Tx has the largest bass, weighing in at 16.07 pounds, caught in Caddo Lake.
On Saturday, March 19, in Sipapu, New Mexico the Sipapu Ski Resort held its Annual Cardboard Derby. The Cardboard Derby gets bigger and better every year. This yearâ€™s event the Team Division was won by The West Texas Wind Runners consisting of team members Chris Hamlin, James Hamlin and Rusty Goates, all of Sweetwater.

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Jessie G. Gomez, 75, of Sweetwater will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father Michael Rodriguez. Interment is at Loraine Cemetery, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater. Rosary will be on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 7 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories. The rosary will be recited by Pauline Gauna and Connie Palacios.
Mr. Gomez died Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
Joseph Edward Mikac, age 67, of Birch Run, MI, died Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Regency Hospital Of Odessa.Â He was born in West, TX on April 24, 1943, to the late Henry John Mikac and Irene Vera (Churchman) Mikac.Â
No services are scheduled at this time.Â Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa.

A graveside service for Shirley Irene Smith, 64, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Cedar Gap Cemetery in Abilene with Rev. Lewis Smith officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Smith died Sunday, April 17, 2011, in Sweetwater.
She was born Dec. 13, 1946, in Abilene. She married Robert Smith on March 25, 1995, in Sweetwater. Shirley had lived in Sweetwater for the past 10 years and in Abilene before. She was a cook by trade and was a member of the New Life Tabernacle Church in Sweetwater.

The Sweetwater High School boys golf team finished as regional alternates after a third-place showing at the district tournament. From left are Guy Bond, Alex Castillo, Mason Andrews, Dylan Torres and Ryan Mercer. Mercer qualified as a medalist and will play in Region I-3A tournament, which is Wednesday and Thursday at Lubbockâ€™s Meadowbrook Golf Course. This will be the third straight regional trip for Mercer, who is a junior. Meanwhile, the SHS girls golf team is playing in the regional tournament today and Tuesday at Lubbock.
