Nurses respond to fire

January 17, 2012

A small fire occurred on Sunday evening, Jan. 15, 2012 at Nolan Nursing and Rehab located at 705 NE Georgia in Sweetwater.
According to NNR administration, the small electric fire began in an overhead light in the room of a resident, thus triggering the alarm system.
Two employees immediately extinguished the blaze, while a total of four employees responded to the situation.

Elks to host dinner for Hoop Shoot participants

The Sweetwater Elks Lodge held its annual Hoop Shoot on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at the Sweetwater Intermediate School gym.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 130 calls for service, issued nine citations and made four arrests from Jan. 13-15, 2012.

The SPD received 51, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 700 block of W. 10th.
• Criminal mischief — 400 block of Robert Lee.
• Criminal mischief — 1400 block of Hughes.
• Theft — 1100 block of Elm.
• Information — 600 block of E. New Mexico.
• Burglary of a habitation — 1200 block of Towncreek.

Arrested by SPD:
• Rick Gale, 44 — Driving while intoxicated.
• John Johnson, 18 — Unauthorized carrying of weapon/theft.

SHS varsity girls basketball team

The Sweetwater High School varsity girls basketball team hosts Big Spring in a District 5-3A game at 6 p.m. today at Mustang Gym. The varsity boys game follows at 7:30 p.m. The 2011-12 girls team includes, from left, Hayley Brownlow, Kendra Crosson, Janell Walker, Kelsi Crosson, Kinsey Browning, Alicia Finn, Candice Hernandez, Elise Lawrence, Kathleen Campbell, Suede Shirley and Shelby Cason. SHS seeks 1st 5-3A victories again

After losing District 5-3A contests to a pair of Wylie squads ranked in the state’s top 25 on Friday, the Sweetwater High School boys and girls will try again today as they entertain Big Spring. This time, the odds may be more favorable as Big Spring, like Sweetwater, is also winless in District 5-3A play.
The girls (0-2, 14-13) tip off at 6 p.m. against a Big Spring team that is also off to an 0-2 start, although the Lady Steers have an impressive 16-7 season record.
Big Spring has played a tougher schedule, facing No. 1-ranked Wylie and No. 7 Brownwood so far.

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Emma R. Gutierrez, 66, of Sweetwater, will be held Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Charles Okonkwa officiating. Final disposition will be cremation under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories, recited by Connie Palacios and Alicia Velez.
Gutierrez died Tuesday, Jan. 17 in Abilene.

Promotions at Sweetwater Healthcare Center

Debi Cory D.O.N (Director of Nurses) is seen congratulating Brandie Howard, who has been recently promoted to the position of A.D.O.N. (Assistant Director of Nursing) at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.
Howard is a Sweetwater graduate both from Sweetwater High School and from Texas State Technical College. She has three children, and credits her father and grandfather as being her role models. She has been employed since 2007 with Sweetwater Healthcare Center as an LVN/charge nurse.

Road to close due to construction

Starting on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, the ongoing construction at the Nolan County Courthouse will prompt some traffic changes.
Locust Street, from Broadway to Third, will be closed off. However, the north and south parking lots of the Courthouse will be open, as well as both parking lots at First Financial Bank.

TSTC to host Veteran’s Discovery Day

January 16, 2012

Texas State Technical College Sweetwater will host a special discovery day on Friday, Jan. 27 for Veterans and their families.
VA support personnel, Veterans Services Officers, employers and TSTC faculty and staff will be on hand to answer questions. Tours of the Sweetwater campus will also be available. Food will be provided.
All active duty military, National Guard, reserve forces, military personnel that are separated, discharged or retired and military families are encouraged to attend.
