Run for the WASP is Saturday

The WASP Museum will host a Veterans Day celebration, Run for the WASP, a benefit 5K run and 1.3 mile walk beginning at 1p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011. Cost is $25 per person and $20 for pre-registered students and military personnel. Cost is $25 on the day of the race for any runner or walker. Register by clicking on “Run for the WASP” button on the top right of the WASP Museum homepage (www.waspmuseum.org), print registration page and mail with entry fee to: National WASP WWII Museum, P.O. Box 456, Sweetwater, TX 79556. There will be awards for 10 year age groups.

The SPD received 11, 911 calls.

• Paisley Shafer, 19 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served no civil papers and made four arrests on Nov. 7, 2011.

• Michael Adam Hernandez, 21, of Sweetwater — Warrant/cruelty to non-livestock animals.

SW, Highland girls to tip off season against each other today

The 2011-12 high school girls basketball season tips off today with two Nolan County teams set to face off against each other.
Class 3A Sweetwater will entertain Class 1A Highland at 6:30 p.m. at Mustang Gym, right after a JV contest between the two schools at 5 p.m.
Today’s game marks the debut of new Sweetwater girls coach Candice Wyatt, who was hired in May fol-lowing the resignation of ex-coach Jerry McSherry. Six players return from a team which finished just below .500 (16-17) overall but was only 1-7 in district.

UPDATE — Victim takes the stand

5:45 p.m. Update:
The state entered six pieces of evidence which the jury saw: a picture of the car the victim woke up in, a picture of the victim's bruised face, the picture of the blood stains on the victim's clothing while in Abilene, and the articles of clothing--his shirt, shorts and boxers which were later found. A video was also shown of the victim.

Emergency Alert System to be tested tomorrow

Key Messages for Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs), The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Weather Service (NWS) will conduct the first-ever national-level test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The test will take place Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 at 1 p.m. CST. The test may be up to three and a half minutes in length.

County approved for infrastructure assistance

AUSTIN, Texas — Federal disaster aid in the form of Public Assistance reimbursements has been approved in 12 more Texas counties affected by the wildfires of late summer, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said Thursday.
Briscoe, Clay, Coryell, Edwards, Hall, Howard, Kimble, Menard, Montague, Nolan, Sutton and Wise counties join the 19 other counties approved for supplementary funding from FEMA under the latest amendment to the Sept. 9 major disaster declaration for the wildfires.
