Tens of thousands of families mourn the loss of loved ones each year to a variety of diseases. Adding to the heartbreak, their death could have been prevented if proper vaccinations were administered.
August is National Immunization Awareness Month and as the month approaches, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) wants to remind families and individuals in the community to catch up on their vaccinations. This is especially important as the new school year begins.
Graveside services for Carl Adward Henkell, 63, of Sweetwater, will be held at 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Henkell died Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 3, 1947, in Temple, Texas. He married Mary Hoskins Kamer on July 4, 2003. Carl had lived in Sweetwater for 30 years working for Taylor Tire Company and Dent Trucking Lines as a truck driver. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in Vietnam. Carl was a Baptist.
John W. Richardson, age 93, formerly of Sweetwater, Texas, died July 12, 2012, in McGregor, Texas. Graveside services were held at the Little Chapel by the Lake at Colonial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Sullivan Funeral home at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2012. Interment was in Colonial Gardens Cemetery. Services were officiated by Rev. James Frazier.
Three months into his tenure as Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s new head football coach and athletic director, the hiring of Shane Mobleyâ€™s coaching staff is complete.
In addition to Mobley, there will be six new faces on the sidelines this fall.Also, three new coaches have been hired at Sweetwater Middle School.
Zach Harrell and John Ward came on board as the new offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively, not long after Mobley was named to replace Craig Slaughter in mid-April.
Though he has yet to play a down, Joseph Banyard is one of the very few Sweet-water High School athletes who has made it to the top of his profession.
Last month, Banyard â€” a star running back at Sweetwater from 2004-06 who also had a standout college career at Texas-El Paso (UTEP) â€” signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints as a rookie free agent. Banyard reports to the Saints for the start of their training camp in Met-airie, La. on Tuesday.
Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Harry Dwane Stevens, 80, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 27, 2012, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Charles Okonkwa officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be recited by Jim Petrie on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at 7 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Early voting for the July 31, run-off primary election will begin on Monday, July 23, in the County Clerk's office â€” located at the Nolan County Courthouse (100 East Third), Suite 108 â€” from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last day of early voting is Friday, July 28.
On the day of the runoff primary election â€” Tuesday, July 31, the polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Two people died and three were injured in a one-vehicle rollover at around 12:45 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2012, in Sweetwater.
A traditional weekly family outing turned tragic when Kimberly Troutz Guynn was driving a 2005 GMC Suburban east bound on Interstate 20 mile marker 240 west of Sweetwater.Â Guynn was following another family vehicle when she began exiting the interstate and then abruptly swerved to re-enter the interstate. The driver over corrected to the left and the vehicle overturned. There were four generations of family in this vehicle.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 24 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on July 19, 2012.
